“Don’t be Stuck on Starting Huge” 5 Startup Tips with Taroob Ahmad, CEO of Honeylux
“Don’t be stuck on starting huge or not starting at all, start small, baby steps, and you can always gradually grow, JUST START!”
I had the pleasure to interview Taroob Ahmad. Taroob is a product developer, entrepreneur, botanist and skincare expert. In addition to her complete line of organic skin care recipes that she has developed from natural ingredients in her kitchen, Ahmad is also founder and CEO of Honeylux Luxury Skincare, a premium line of specially-formulated, treatments that promote youthful and healthy looking skin. Her premiere product is a specially formulated Retinol and Vitamin C serum for younger looking skin but in early spring of 2018, the company will be expanding its offerings to include an all-natural coconut oil for cooking and beauty, a facial moisturizing spray, and an under-eye cream. A biology major in college, Ahmad conducted a great deal of research to identify organic ingredients that could have a lasting effect on the skin, without the harmful chemicals found in other skin care lines. She has always understood the importance of using only natural, high-quality ingredients when it comes to solutions that work on a body’s most delicate features. Frustrated by the artificial ingredients and chemical fillers found in most skincare applications, she used her scientific background to meticulously formulate her own line of natural products. Taroob is a graduate of Central Connecticut University and currently resides in Edgewater, NJ with her husband and young daughter.
Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?
Backstory of Honeylux is pretty simple, I wanted to find the best product for my skin and couldn’t find anything. Coming from a Bio background and reading ingredients; there was nothing I was willing to put on my face. Frustrated with the markets selection I created my own product.
Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that happened to you since you started your company.
Funniest story would probably be me experimenting skin care routines on my husband. So many weekends while my husband would be sleeping in, I would apply all my skincare recipes on him. He would wake up horrified and start yelling. I would make deals with him promising to make his favorite dishes or desserts if he waited until the mask dries to wash it off lol
What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?
What makes our company stand out is that we focus on high quality ingredients instead of investing in huge marketing ads. We want to let our product speak for itself and we truly stand by our serum.
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
I dreamed of going into medicine ever since I was a little girl, and since I couldn’t; a part of me was heartbroken. My husband always showed me the bigger picture in life and made me understand that just because I couldn’t do one thing it doesn’t mean I should just give up on everything else. He pushed me to do what I like and when I told him about my plan to create Honeylux and product ideas he was more excited than I was. He called up all his business associates and helped me get started.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
Any time someone purchases a Honeylux product, a portion of that sale is given back to Operation Smile in our customer’s name. Operation Smile is a charity focusing on surgery repair for people born with cleft lip. We want to make people feel while using Honeylux not only are they making themselves feel beautiful but they are also empowering the less fortunate the same feeling.
What are your “5 things I wish someone told me before I launched my Start-Up” and why. Please share a story or example for each.
5 things I wish someone told me before I launched my Start-Up are:
1. Don’t start a business with the idea of just making money, focus on creating great products and service, money will follow.
2. Be prepared for a fight; not all businesses take off right away. It take a lot of time, energy and effort to actually “make it”
3. You must be serious about your start up. You will Eat, Sleep and Breathe your business (basically married to it), if you don’t have the time to dedicate to it; don’t bother.
4. Make sure before you launch your Start-up that you do complete research on your business. Learn about your competition, market analysis and customer reception.
5. Don’t be stuck on starting huge or not starting at all, start small, baby steps, and you can always gradually grow, JUST START!
Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might see this. :-)
I would love to have a private lunch with Bill Gates; not just because he’s extremely successful but because he just keeps giving back to the world more and more. Bill gates and his wife are involved with so much different charities around the word it just inspires me to be a better person and always try to make an effort to give back to our world which is in need of so much help at this time. With all the diseases, hunger, lack of clean water and resources our world has, a little really goes a long way.
