Grandma Said The ‘F Word’

Magical Moments and Meaningful Memories

Oops! Granny said the ‘F-Word’.

The New Year has begun and if you are anything like me, you’re probably ready to fly with your PLANS — from how to boost your career in thirty days to getting fit and eating healthy.

AND, because you’re determined to make things happen, you’ve already scheduled all your activities for the next ninety days. You even have backup plans in place, should Life get in the way.

BUT WAIT!

Have you blocked quality time with your kids?

Juggling work and family is a constant challenge for families today. Ironically, the wonders of modern technology seem to have created more stress and more overwhelm for moms and dads rather than more TIME for the things that truly matter.

You’ve probably heard the saying, Time is not something you have. Time is something you make. But, in the hectic reality we live in, no matter how much time we set aside, before we know it, it gets filled with urgent demands and immediate trivialities. Sadly, when we’re pressed for time, it is the people, who mean the most to us, who get pushed aside.

We make futile attempts to console ourselves by making false promises that tomorrow we will find the time, but here’s the thing, kids don’t wait for us. They grow up before we get our sh*t together and by then, they’re out the door.

The GOOD NEWS is that it doesn’t have to be this way.

Rather than trying to find time, all we need to do is make the most of the time, we’re already spending with our kids — as we make our way to and from school, waiting in line at the grocery store or at the dentist’s; as we make dinner and tidy up around the house.

All kids really want is a little bit of our time doing the everyday stuff. It’s the little things in Life that create magical moments and meaningful memories.

The following story demonstrates one simple way.

The Big Guy and I were spending time with our grandkids. One of our after-dinner pastimes was to play word and number games.

One of their favorites was to come up with as many words as they could beginning with a chosen letter. It was my grandson’s turn and with a devious smile on his face he chose the letter “f”.

After listing a dozen words or so: fruit, feet, face, fun, family, friends … my grandson announced, “and there’s another one …, but I’m not going to tell!” His sister, who had also recently learnt the “f word” at school (but like her twin wasn’t quite sure what it actually means), began to giggle …

Would grandma say the ‘f word’?

And, how would grandma react if they were to say it?

Would they dare? And if they did? Would grandma tell mom?

I looked at them with a smile no smaller than theirs.

“I know what word you are thinking of!” I announced. They began to squirm in their seats. “And it’s a great word! Actually, it’s one of my favorites. I do it all the time! In fact, I always look for a special opportunity to do it and a special someone to do it with.”

Hmm … did grandma know the ‘f word’?

“Say it! Say it!” the twins cheered, their younger brother pitching it. He wasn’t quite sure what it was all about, but he wasn’t going to miss out on the fun.

So, I said it! My favorite ‘f word’ — FIRGUN.

While at first they were a bit disappointed that it wasn’t THE ‘f word’, they were kind of intrigued.

“Do you really play it, grandma?” my grandson asked.

“Why?” his sister demanded to know.

“Do you really play it with strangers?” he questioned.

“Why?” she insisted.

“Do do you really look for opportunities to say nice things to people?” he probed.

“Why?” she persisted.

“Yes! Yes! Yes!” I laughed turning to him.

“Because it’s fun,” I declared turning to her.

Fast forward four-five years and many many more fun-times later.

The twins still ask me to tell them the ‘f-word’ story. A simple after-dinner activity created a magical moment and meaningful memory bearing a message, they will take with them the rest of their life.

You too can create magical moments and meaningful memories! If you’re not sure how, just ask me in the comments below.
