“Hire People Where Your Weaknesses Are — You Can’t Do It All”: 6 Leadership Lessons With Mike Heller And David Spencer
I had the pleasure to interview Mike Heller and David Spencer, Co-CEOs and Co-founders of Talent Resources Sports
Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?
We met at the age of 20 during tennis camp. In high school, we’d go to the same parties and places. After high school, mike went to college to become a lawyer, and then Dave graduated with a business degree. Mike was repping Lindsay Lohan at the time, Dave repped David Blaine at the time. Mike created TR, he started to get many requests for athletes, and knew Dave had this knowledge of sports, and together they created talent resources sports. Together it is now almost 8 years together. Their end goal is to elevate annually as a brand. Pushing themselves to be better every year.
What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?
We focus on building bridges between consumer brands/services with the sports world, specifically athletes. We do this a myriad of different ways. First, through conventional endorsements, where a brand borrows a particular athletes’ equity to help elevate their brands visibility to help sell product. Second, we use influencers, and social media strategy to create authentic product placement opportunities utilizing athletes, celebrities, and networks to extend the reach of a brand.
Lastly, what we’re most passionate about is the event driven marketing we do at important culturally charged moments in the calendar year. Our company creates platforms at Super Bowl, NBA All Star, The ESPYs, Kentucky Derby, and other important moments in the sports world where brands can be a part of the pop culture conversation
None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are?
Dave and I have always had older mentors, different, but both older who helped us. They both have a love for reading biographies on successful people. Dave read Nike biography, and mike read the Steve Jobs biography. We buy books and trade them with each other. We also write in the books and review each other’s notes.
How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
A lot of the times we will attach a charity component to their events. David and I always donate to charity buzz as well. We enjoy raising money through our events.
The company is always looking to elevate we are never satisfied. We always aim higher

We have six:
