How Giving Money Freedom Changes Everything

Look for the Unexpected

I have two cats. Bella…..who only allows me to pet her head. The rest of her body is completely off limits and if I try, I get a warning bite! Ouch! This demand of hers to only be petted on the head really limits her ability to accept affection and pleasure. You see, I can’t always reach her head, but I can reach her back…….but that is off limits. She is limiting my affection to her head, which is a small, small part of her body (note the size of this girl!).

Bella

On the other hand, my other cat Adso, wants adored from head to toe. He loves it all and more. As long as he is in the mood, it’s all open for equal pets, rubs and scratches.

Guess which cat is grumpier? You got it Bella. She is moody and pouty and just plain cantankerous. I often wonder if she would be happier if she allowed the unexpected pet down her back. Would she be more content if she opened herself up to more?

One of the things I encourage my clients to do is to make sure they are keeping their eyes open to money coming to them from unexpected places.

This can often come with some resistance. When I quit my 6-figure accounting career three years ago, I had the mindset that I was NEVER going back to corporate America. No ifs, ands or buts! It just wasn’t going to happen.

Fast forward two years, my business was still in the fledgling stages, my savings was gone and the part-time job I had didn’t pay enough to meet even half my bills. I knew I was capable of making more money. I was just resisting the idea of money coming from anywhere EXCEPT my business.

In fact, three times over the prior two years, I had an opportunity to work in accounting again. But each time I said no. I didn’t want to be back in that world and I believed in my business.

But I needed more income and I needed it quickly. I was working on my mindset and my belief system. I was envisioning a new and different life for myself. I was affirming that I deserved and was worthy of more money. I was reminding myself daily that it was safe for me to earn money in non-traditional ways. Basically, I was doing everything I knew to do to shift my own perspective and be open to more cash flow.

That was when I got the 4th call (from the same employer by the way!). He asked me one more time to consider coming to work for him. I’ll be honest and tell you that I almost said no. But I bit my tongue and said I’d think about it. As I began to think about it, I really began considering what if. What if I could do it and still retain my entrepreneurial freedom? What if I could make enough money to cover my monthly bills? What if I could do the work from anywhere in the world? What if I could set my own hours? What if, what if, what if!

Looking at the what ifs, led me to ask myself what I wanted. IF I took the job, what would I want. I came up with three non-negotiables and laid them out for the prospective employer. At this point, I knew I could take it or leave it. I was really clear on what I wanted and needed my life to look like. If that didn’t work for him, then that was ok. Would you believe he said yes to all three on the spot?

Just like that, the money I needed was coming from a place I hadn’t expected. I wasn’t looking for an accounting job, I didn’t necessarily want an accounting job, and certainly didn’t expect one. But before I could receive it, I had to be open to it. I had to allow it to flow into my life. I had to be available for the possibility.

Accepting that position had some unexpected benefits too. Not only was more money flowing in my life, but also:

  • More joy because I love numbers! I got to put my nerd hat on and geek out like the queen geek I am!
  • Freedom to fast forward my dream of moving out of WV to sunny FL (where I live close to the ocean AND have a house with a pool)!
  • Reminder that I do have skills that not everyone does….budgeting, managing cash flow, and solving problems.

This is such an important lesson for us all to learn. It doesn’t matter if you are an entrepreneur, in corporate America or a stay at home mom. If you are desiring more money to come into your life, let go of the expectation of where it is going to come from.

When you do that, you stop missing out on some of the opportunities — that you didn’t even realize were opportunities! When you are open to possibility and what if, money has a free path to travel on. But if you are holding on to your expectations, desires and should’s for your money, then money has far less freedom.

Just like Adso is open to receive affection all over, let yourself receive money from wherever it comes. Give money the freedom to flow from all around you and a myriad of sources.

Are you open to allowing money to flow from unexpected places? I’d love to hear how it has shown up for you, share your story below.
