Discover the better way & ditch the burnout

“Be the hardest worker.”

“Hard work = results.”

“Anything worth doing/having is hard.”

In our achievement-based culture, we hear these types of phrases from the time we grow up in school and sports, to when we enter the workforce and are taught that to get ahead, we have to work the most.

So when we start our own businesses, we naturally think and act like the same thing is true.

Our society very much has a “work hard to achieve, work hard to receive” mentality, and this mindset has permeated the entrepreneurial spaces as well.

It works for some people, but, contrary to popular belief, hard work is not enough for everyone to succeed at the highest level.

This mentality is not for high-achievers. It’s not the lesson we need to learn; otherwise we’d have it already. This powerful population already knows all about hard work, and it’s gotten us exactly where we sit today. We love the idea of “Working smarter, not harder,” but our default is to work harder to get more.

As high-achieving, (recovering) perfectionists, we need to learn to let go, to relax, to enjoy — you know, all those things that make me twitch a little bit.

Continuing to “hustle” is not the thing that’s ultimately going to bring us joy and satisfaction in life.

So, working hard? That’s not our lesson. That’s not the thing that’s going to help us grow our businesses to be a success.

However, let’s be clear here: I am NOT telling you to sit back and do nothing. Your path to success is not through bon-bons and soap operas.

To spend your days at the spa, or drinking your coffee on the back porch and finding your zen while expecting your business to magically build itself because of all the relaxing you did.

You absolutely have to lay the foundation for your business — but it’s more about consistency than it is about “crushing it 18 hours a day.

I truly believe that the secret to success in business is simplicity.

I think early in business when we have a lot of self-doubt and fear, it’s easier to embrace this “let-go” mentality to justify avoidance. This justification is super handy when we haven’t been visible that day, when we haven’t followed up with someone, or when we haven’t made an offer.

Letting go of the “be the hardest worker” mentality is NOT the same as pressing an easy-escape button on the things that may be scaring you or leaving you stress-paralyzed.

It’s that process of knowing yourself — acknowledging your weaknesses and where you stand in your business. Are you avoiding something you know in heart you need to do? Do you have the foundations of your business in place?

When you reach that point where you can say “I have these pieces in place,” and then you begin to trust that simplicity and that foundation is going to pay off.

And then you can go play instead of worrying that “it’s never enough.”

Where are you — have you reached that point? The one where you need to let go and trust the business you’ve built? Or are you still working on that foundation?
