How to Finally Upgrade Your Money Story

Uncovering a Lifelong Money Block

Are you aware of your money story?

I’ve always considered myself pretty clear of money blocks. You know those pesky beliefs that keep you stuck within a certain income range. Maybe you are living paycheck to paycheck, or just can’t seem to get ahead? Those money blocks often come from childhood and are started from the things we hear growing up. They come from our parents, our grandparents, our neighbors, basically all the people around us. These are the things that burrow into our subconscious mind and control how we think and feel about money.

For example, growing up I heard things like:

· “Money doesn’t grow on trees”

· “I’m not made of money”

· “Money is the root of all evil”

· “We don’t have money for that”

That isn’t a comprehensive list, but hearing these you might get a picture of what was going on in my family.

There was always a sense that money caused more harm than good and that there was never enough of it. I remember early on thinking, “This is no way to live. I’m not going to live like that when I grow up.”

And I didn’t.

I started out with a two-year college degree and quickly saw that wasn’t going to provide me with the money I wanted. I went back to school and received a four-year accounting degree. From there, I determined to become a CPA. I worked hard, but I definitely got rewarded monetarily for that work. I managed to get bonuses, annual increases and promotions quite easily. I had money for vacations to exotic locations, I saved and put 20% down on my house, and I could buy expensive shoes and purses if I wanted to.

I’ve always considered myself pretty clear of money blocks, so when I quit my 9–5 to become an entrepreneur, I wasn’t worried about money. I had saved enough in general savings to keep me for a while. Plus, I’m good at making money. “I’ve got this,” I thought.

I bought some training to learn how to be a top network marketer, because I knew that smart entrepreneurs are always investing in themselves. I also knew that this was a new venture and I wanted to do it right and not make every single mistake in the book. So, I took what I learned to heart and worked hard at doing exactly what they said. But, I didn’t make money in my business. After about eight months, I decided to switch gears and hired a business coach. I started taking her suggestions and worked really diligently doing just about all she suggested. Things like: getting visible, telling my story, practicing my pitch, making my pitch, etc. Yet, I still wasn’t making money in my business.

What is going on here? Why can’t I make money? I set a realistic goal that wasn’t even close to replacing my 9–5 income. But it was more than enough to cover monthly expenses. I used affirmation. I made connections. I sent emails. I just couldn’t understand; why wasn’t I making money?

During a group coaching program called “Leave your 9–5”, one of the weekly assignments was to dig into your money story. I was like, “Meh I don’t have a block here, but I’ll do it anyway”, because that’s how I roll.

I sat down with my pen and paper and started to answer the questions. I started to write and write. Before long, I saw this pattern emerge. It seems that I had this belief that never even crossed my mind in a conscious manner. I never recall ever actually thinking it.

The belief was: “It’s not safe for me to earn money in a non-traditional way”.

What? Wait? What?

I had uncovered a big, big, big ole fat block in my money story. You see, being an entrepreneur is not traditional. So, therefore, I was not feeling safe in my business. NOW I had something to work with!

I wrote a few affirmations to start using and I posted them everywhere. Would you believe that in just two days, I had one new client? Within two weeks, I had four new clients! Wow! I can’t even believe it myself.

This was one of my biggest lessons of 2017. Even if you don’t think you have a money block, you probably do. Especially if the money isn’t flowing the way you want it to. Just by me uncovering the block, started money flowing for me immediately. The block wasn’t fixed, but it was exposed and that is the first step. And often the biggest step!

What kind of money story do you have? Are there things that you are thinking about money that are keeping you stuck? Are they keeping you in a place of lack? If you want to change it, start asking yourself:

· What have I heard about money?

· What do I believe about money?

· Do I believe there is money for all I need?

· Do I believe there is money for all I want?

· Is money easy to make?

· Does it flow in and out of your life with ease?

Write it all down and see what emerges. You just might be surprised and uncover something that can completely change your money story too!
