How to Give Yourself Chronic Fatigue

1. Avoid real food — just grab what you can find — eat tons of bread

2. Bring all physical exercise and functional body movements to a slow halt

3. Get emotionally fatigued and forget to reach out to family and friends — just forget how to have light conversation

4. Stare at a computer screen with this face for the majority of the day

Follow these 4 steps for at least 4 months and it is very possible you will turn out like me, physically and emotionally stranded in the middle of your Ph.D.


I am going on 9 years in college (maybe 10, I don’t know). I am struggling. Others see me as the most successful person that they know. I was given a full-ride fellowship to get my Ph.D. in engineering at Purdue University, one of the best engineering schools in the U.S. I was voted “most likely to succeed” in high school. I was also socially popular and excelled in many sports at one point. I have a job lined up for when I graduate that some would consider a big name type of career. I got to this point because I have worked very hard and it is rewarding to me, but the past 2 or 3 years have been rough.


Many people only see my on paper. They don’t see the effort and dedication behind my achievements. In the past few years my life became heavily unbalanced, the effort and dedication turned into prolonged stress and left no time for reflection, down time, and entertainment. This resulted in a person who can now hardly get out of bed, whose hair is falling out, who has to take a break in a dark room after technical conversation or anything with prolonged noise or visual stimulation. As I look back I can see how there were many factors that contributed to my current state, and now I am working toward changing and eliminating them with a physically and mentally balanced life.

All of the non-specific symptoms I am experiencing have no real cure and have been generalized into the Chronic Fatigue category. Now I am on a vivid lifestyle change. Stay with me on my journey to wellness, my journey to completeness, my life path of staying happy, healthy, and strong as I climb the ladder placed before me.

ABOUT ME: I come from a big, loving, semi-dysfunctional family. I have 4 older brothers so I didn’t know how to embrace my feminine traits until my college years. Despite that, I found myself in cheerleading throughout high school and college because I love doing flips! I avoided English classes and consumed all my STEM classes, which is why I am now getting my Ph.D. in Geomatics Engineering.
