Feelings from the past six hours have included calmness and anger, happiness and fear, sadness and gratefulness. A feeling on its own is neither negative or positive, it just is. The story you tell yourself, the narrative, is what attributes the negative or positive spin. If you see me crying, am I sad? Is it wrong to feel sad? The feeling behind the crying is frustration, is frustration a negative thing that needs avoiding or eradicating? Would sitting on top of frustration with gratitude journals and books on crushing it alleviate the frustration? No. So why do you think you can just flip the switch?
People love putting people in boxes because it makes it easier for them to understand and therefore respond. If this, then that. Rather than if this, then I see, I get it, I hear you.
The theme of Mental Health Awareness Week is surviving or thriving.
I would like to add understanding smack bang in the middle. Surviving is not a wholly negative thing and thriving is not a wholly positive thing. Thrive is about growing and developing but sometimes in order to grow and develop you need to continue with the status quo, to firmly plant roots in the soil at your disposable.
Sink in and understand where you are. All the nuances will show you the inner conflicts, the contradictory 1s and 0s that you are simultaneously holding. Are they really contradictory or are they just the normal case of being human?
