“I Once Called First Lady Michelle Obama “Mish” And She Answered, Yes, Laura” A Conversation With Reality Star Laura Govan
I had the pleasure of interviewing Laura Govan, Reality Star and Founder of Shop in Real Life. Acclaimed both for her grace and for an edgy, angular flair, Laura Govan, 37, is best known as one of the breakout personalities as some of television’s top rated reality shows. Recently launching her accessory line SHOP IN REAL LIFE, her robust resume includes appearances on VH1’s hit show Basketball Wives: LA, I Dream of NeNe, The Wedding, Huff Post’s BV 365 and most recently TV One’s The Next 15, with more slated for 2018.
Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?
As a young kid I was in a terrible accident. I ended up in a coma for 3 months, breathing through a tracheostomy tube for weeks, and then was in a full body cast, from chin to my toes, for 6 weeks. I was in the hospital for a year learning how to walk, talk, and read again. I was told I would never have kids or run fast or be able to read at any level. 20 years later I became one of the best women’s basketball players in the state of California, playing at an elite level and have given birth to four amazing, healthy babies (Imani, Izela, Aloni, and Alijah). As for the reading part, ummm…. they got me there! But I was still able to get a masters degree in sport psychology.
Can you share the funniest of most interesting story that happened to you in the course of your career?

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

If someone would want to emulate your career, what would you suggest are the most important things to do?

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why.
1) To hold your breath when giving an interview so they can’t edit you!
2) Don’t smile so hard when taking pictures, people should never see your back molars
3) Make sure to always carry gum, not just for hot breath but to use as tape in an emergency! In case your body tape doesn’t work!
4) Just be your fuckin’ self no matter what.
5) Make all the money you can because you will get old.
Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might just see this. :-)
Ummm… I would have breakfast with Oprah and try to steal her purse. Lol
