I am a born and raised New Yorker so I have seen the city in many different ways. The city has changed with me and with every self-transformation, I find new things to do and see. I guess that’s why it’s the city that never sleeps! It’s the city that never slows down and is always transforming itself. The city can be anything for anyone at anytime. So when you want to go out and party, the city will be up all night for you. And when you want to workout, there’s a never ending amount of boutique fitness studios on every corner. And when you want to zen the fuck out, there’s a studio for that as well. New York City truly has it all.
These are my personal favorites. There will always be so much to do and not enough time. But I believe that when you find something that works, whether that’s what you eat, where you work out, or how you relax, then stick with it because obviously something is working. I love exploring the city as I have evolved from rowdy teenager to responsible corporate America adult to wellness seeker. I don’t think it’s weird that I know where to get a really great hydrocolonic and green juice.
Below are my insider tips for being well in New York City! And if there’s something you’re interested in doing that you don’t see below, let me know! I’d be happy to seek it out, experience it and let you know how it is! This is a place to learn, to grow and to seek out knowledge in all things.
We’ve all heard that an anti-inflammatory diet is a great way to help our bodies heal because it eliminates food that causes our bodies to work harder to digest our food, leaving little ability for it to actually do it’s job. Hu Kitchen is the first fast-casual restaurant to be paleo friendly and eliminate canola and vegetable oils (Whole Foods should learn this lesson), promote knowing where your food comes from and eating grass-fed meat rather than eliminate it all together. And it promotes delicious whole foods with limited ingredients that everyone can enjoy no matter what lifestyle or diet you follow. There’s plenty of vegetables and meat options along with fresh juices, homemade granola and dessert. Yes dessert — being healthy and happy means having your cake and eating it too!

Real food is the idea behind this local eatery in the village. It promotes better health and wellness by eating less sugar, more vegetables and of course nutrient rich bone broth! The menu is filled with bone broth ranging from chicken to beef to vegetarian with add-ons including collagen, turmeric, ginger, or blended sweet potato. There’s also the most delicious grass-fed burger that can be served on a paleo bun, gluten-free bun, or a portobello mushroom bun. And would you like fries with that? Springbone has carrot fries that will make your mouth water and begging for me!

When a juice bar can be found on every corner in NYC, it’s refreshing to come across a cafe featuring more than just green juices. The Alchemist Kitchen is a plant based cafe featuring herbal tonics and medicinal remedies. You can also shop many different brands from Sun Potion to Moondeli to CBD patches from Mary’s Nutritonals. There’s also workshops and pop-up events to educate the public on different wellness modalities. Oh and you can head downstairs for all of your wellness treatments like infrared sauna, cryofacials, reiki, theraphi and IV Vitamin Drips. Mulberry & Vine
Healthy fast-casual seems to be the new restaurant in town and Mulberry & Vine is at the top of the list. The menu features no refined sugar, non-GMO foods, pasture-raised chicken and grass-fed beef. The idea behind the food is to eat fresh and nothing artificial or processed. A simple concept that more people need to follow when it comes to serving others and themselves!

Two Hands Restaurant & Bar
If you’re looking for more of a sit down meal with fresh food, juices and coffee, then look no further than Two Hands. This hot spot has a waiting time of at least 20 minutes at lunch time and the food is worth the wait! The restaurant brings together the community around delicious food and a relaxed state of mind.

Pressed Juicery (Freeze)
A foodie list wouldn’t be complete without dessert. And we’re not talking no fat, no sugar, flavorless cardboard dessert. We’re talking good for you dairy-free ice cream made from juice! Yup, juice! Pressed Juicery is known for delicious and refreshing juices from green juice to orange juice to activated charcoal to chocolate almond smoothies. And now their juices can be purchased in a frozen soft serve form. It uses only fruits and vegetables, just like the juices and is sweetened with dates. Then you can add chocolate or almond butter drizzle, fresh fruit or granola to make it a bit more indulgent. So go on and eat your green juice with a spoon!

Yoga is known for its slow moving, relaxing sounds and mantras. But Y7 Yoga brings a fresh new outlook to the practice with Hip-Hop Yoga. The class takes places in an infrared heated room so your body can heal from the inside out. The infrared sauna heats our body from the core so it can detox and increase your energy while you’re flowing. The room is completely dark which forces you to trust yourself, your movement and your intuition. And working out in your sports bra or without a top is encourages because it’s freaking dark so who the hell cares — no one is looking at you so don’t worry. It helps build self confidence and self-trust. And who doesn’t love a strong beat to dance to, I mean flow to!

Bar Method was my first ever workout. Yup, it was 6 years ago and I stepped foot into the SoHo studio having never worked out before, but I found a love and passion for this fitness class that I never knew existed. There are plenty of barre classes out there, but Bar Method is the only one created with a physical therapist, so all of the moves are safe and effective to lengthen and tone your body. Every move has a purpose and works the entire body. Your legs will shake, your core will be engaged and I’ve been told that a few months of Bar Method can help you grow an inch (your posture will improve, but I’ll take any inch I can get)! So come tuck and pulse at the bar and let your inner ballerina out!

How about some empowerment with your workout. Shaktibarre has got it all! From barre and yoga classes to meditation, sound baths and a wonderful community co-working cafe. You will never hear instructors telling you to workout for that bikini body or to work harder and get lower to workout off that pizza you shouldn’t have eaten last night. There is no guilt or body shaming going on at this fitness studio. Instead, it’s about opening your heart, allowing energy to flow through your body and releasing energy that does not belong. It’s an empowering thing to let your body do what it wants when it wants because that’s what it craves, not as a form of punishment. This is more than just a place to sweat — it’s a place to be you!

Sometimes you just have to punch something! And box + flow is the place to do that. This isn’t your average boxing studio though. This is a place to punch it out, get your adrenaline pumping, get your heart rate up, and then slow it down as you flow through it all, releasing the energy you don’t need anymore. I don’t know how to describe Body Art except that it is a holistic exercise. It is a total body workout that combines yoga, pilates and HIIT to get your body moving in a fluid motion and help it heal itself. There’s warrior poses, mountain climbers and shavasannah all rolled into one heart pounding yin and yang fitness class. There is a deeper connection of mind and body through the sound and flow of your breath. It is the ultimate form of balance in life and fitness.
Forget everything you forgot yoga was and enter the Woom. This sensory experience takes yoga to a whole new experience using all of your senses, but especially sight! It forces you to truly take in your surroundings with sight through projected images, sound through the vocal meditations, touch through the movement of your own body and taste with the magical elixirs following class. The class encourages you to trust yourself and your body to know what it needs to heal and the WOOM is part of that journey as a guide. With the release of gravity and the feeling of floating, you are able to completely relax your body. Add on to that the total darkness and quietness and your body will let go of any stress it is holding on to and begin the process of detoxing and healing.

You’ve been told meditation is good for you, but you don’t know how. There’s so many different ways to do it and then you start thinking ‘am I doing this wrong?’ Well, take it from someone who can’t workout on their home at home or at a gym and needs the community of a class, MNDFL is the answer to all of those questions. It is a community focused meditation studio that features different teachers from different styles of meditation and is a safe environment to enhance your own practice. There is no judgement if you’re a beginner and there is no praise if you’re a novice. At this mindful studio, the only thing you need to do is relax and quiet your mind.

I wish I could spend every day at the beach. I always feel so much more relaxed, my skin is smooth and my mind is calm. But since I can’t, there’s always BREATHE Salt Room. The entire room at BREATHE is made of pink himalayan salt which we like to say acts as a toothbrush for your lungs and allows you to breathe better and also improves skin conditions. And what’s better than sitting in a salt room? How about working out in one. Not only will you breathe in the salt, but you’ll get to flow through it which causes you to focus on balance (salt is definitely not a flat service), and relaxation. There’s only so many holistic things we can do for our bodies like eating well, working out and freezing and sweating it off. But what we put on our body is just as important as what we put in it. That’s why Sunday’s is my favorite place to go for a mani/pedi. Not only does it feature vegan and non-toxic nail polishes, you’ll find your whole body beginning to relax as it’s massaged with coconut milk, rose petals and orange peel scrubs. Yes, I’m talking about a manicure and not an adaptogenic smoothie. You can also choose to have a guided meditation while receiving your treatment which will help you relax even more. We’re busy New Yorkers and we like to multi-task, so why not do more than one thing while treating yourself to some self-care. And there’s a completely different atmosphere to this nail salon built upon relaxation, community, mindfulness and comfort.

Sometimes all it takes is a very special event to get us out of our comfort zone and meeting like minded individuals. Some of these happen weekly, others monthly, seasonally or yearly. But be sure to check them out because these pop-ups are the best of wellness in New York City!
There are a ton of fitness events and a ton of food events in NYC, but what about combining them for a holistic approach to wellness. Both fitness and food nourish the mind and body and Holistic Happening presents yoga followed by an anti-inflammatory meal that brings together the community for conversation, enjoyment, relaxation and empowerment. Find this dynamic duo flowing and eating all over the city at different locations including Modell’s, Athleta, the James Hotel, BREATHE and Primary co-working space
On the first Wednesday of every month, you can join 300 New Yorker’s for a community meditation. It also features performances, group chat and local eats provided by Sweetgreen!
The Big Quiet
If you thought 300 people was a large mediation community, try thousands. Every 3 months, Medi Club expands and invites the community to join in a mass mediation at iconic New York City locations. Everything from Lincoln Center to The Oculus, to Madison Square Garden. It invites people to learn about meditation and have an entirely new experience in places they never would have thought could be peace and quiet!
Brew You Yoga
You don’t have to be sober to be well. In fact, the body goes through its own brewing process similar to that of beer. Integrative Health Coach Leanne Maciel hosts monthly events at the Bronx Brewery which feature a vinyasa flow followed by a craft beer tasting. Don’t worry — that’s the order of things so you won’t be doing a tipsy version of downward dog!
Wellness Official Rooftop Meditation and Yoga at The James Hotel
Millana Snow has launched a summer favorite with her Wellness Official rooftop mediation and yoga at The James Hotel. Every Thursday from Memorial Day to Labor Day you can start your day with a sunrise meditation and vinyasa flow 18 floor above the New York City streets. Every week there is a different instructor and leader, so come out and have a new experience every week. Holistic Happening had the honor of hosting 2 weeks in July and we hope to be able to do it again next summer!
