“It’s Okay To Be Sad, Sadness Is Waiting To Be Turned Into Love” Words Of Wisdom With Filmmaker Jordan Taylor Wright
“We are all love, and it is beautiful to accept and love yourself fully. This is important with all facets of life, especially with creating art.”
I had the pleasure to interview Jordan Taylor Wright. Jordan is a filmmaker and photographer who launched a production company / creative agency , Taylor Cut Films. The company creates narrative films, commercials, and music videos for artists such as Usher, Justin Bieber, Martin Garrix, Jennifer Lopez, and The Chainsmokers. Jordan has also created commercial content for brands such as Audi, Bose, American Express, Tiffany, and L’Oreal and is currently in production on his first feature movie and book slated to come out this year
Yitzi: Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?
Grew up in a South African household raised in New Jersey. Parents separated when I was 10 and split custody time between the 2 of them. This gave me an early introduction into traveling outside of my comfort zone as “my home” was an internal feeling as opposed to a physical external location. (I moved 4 times while growing up throughout high school.)
I majored in film and business in college and took a great interest in psychology as well. I loved understanding how our minds functioned and why we think the way we do. Understanding myself allowed me to understand how to be an outside perspective when creating stories visually.
After graduating college, I moved back home to NJ where I got an internship working at a production company shooting for reality shows that aired on different stations such as the Food Network. On paper, this was a great opportunity but most importantly it wasn’t fulfilling my soul’s expression. I would film music videos and concerts for free on weekends, approaching managers saying “I’m going to make a recap edit of the live performance, I don’t want any money, but if you enjoy the video and would like to share it, please say Taylor Cut Films made it.” I ended up catching the attention of a musical artist who at the time was signed to Pharrell, and from there I quit my job and went on a tour across the USA. A few months later after returning home, I received a call saying Usher was coming to NYC to star in an off broadway show, and asked if I was interested in creating the content for it. I said absolutely, and that led to a 3 year adventure of traveling and making visuals for Usher all across the world.
Yitzi: Can you share the funniest or most interesting story that happened to you since you started your company
Every story is interesting to be honest. One time in Dubai we were scheduled to go on a helicopter tour (me, Usher, a prince of Dubai who invited Usher to perform at this music festival) and on the drive over Usher kept teasing me saying we were going skydiving (he knew I was afraid of heights at the time). I kept saying I would stay in the car if so until he finally said he was just joking with me. When we arrived at the helicopter facility, the prince hadn’t arrived yet and the pilot said in broken English, “This is where we also do skydive Dubai” (a famous skydiving event.) Usher didn’t fully understand and replied with “I’ve always wanted to go skydiving” to which the pilot replied with “Okay, you’ll go skydiving!”. They began to harness him into a parachute, when Usher looked over at me, and with his eyes basically said, “I’m not doing this alone”. I smiled and said “Okay, let’s do it”. We ended up jumping out of a helicopter at close to 12,000 feet and it was one of the best experiences of my life. Fear is just the unknown waiting to be turned into love. So happy to have stepped out of my comfort zone that day. Universe works in a beautiful way.
Yitzi: What do you think makes your company stand out? Can you share a story?
Taylor Cut Films is about creative expression. Whether it be a music video, feature film, or commercial, we express visuals by means of storytelling through our soul. We all have a story to tell. We all have energy within us waiting to be shared. Some express themselves through music, whether it be listening or creating. Some do it through words, or painting, or videos, or dance. We all have an outlet which is authentically us (our essence). We create content from this place for other to see, so that they too can be mirrors of love and creativity for all as well. If it feels right we know. I’m proud of creating content that shows imagination, inspiration, and unity.
Yitzi: None of us are able to achieve success without some help along the way. Is there a particular person who you are grateful towards who helped get you to where you are? Can you share a story?
Everyone in life plays a special role. My mother was fundamental in gently showing me life is so vast and beautiful outside of what may feel comfortable to you. All the best experiences have come when I have least expected it. Planning within itself isolates and eliminates the infinite possibilities that could occur. Learning to tune into our silence and allow the universe to guide us in the right direction in pivotal in reaching our maximum potential. Thankful for all the beautiful guides I’ve had along this journey.
Yitzi: How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?
We are all mirror reflections of ourselves. We all have love and light inside us, and by loving ourselves fully, we are able to be the best mirror / beacon of light for others to see as well. I know “I as Jordan” doesn’t create the art and visuals you see. I am merely able to remove the notion of ego so that I may be a vessel for creativity to pass through me. We own nothing in this world. Possessions will come and go, people will come and go, we too will come and go. Are consciousness is a beautiful mirror which remains and observes. Blessed to be able to create visions and art everyday for others to digest and see.
Yitzi: What are your “5 things I wish someone told me before I launched my Start-Up” and why. Please share a story or example for each.
If money is your goal you will never find happiness.
All humans are the same. Famous or not, followers or not, we are all the same. We all feel, and we all deal with the same emotions.
Judging or comparing in any capacity will only bring sadness. We are not other, we are one.
It’s okay to be sad, sadness is waiting to be turned into love. We are all love, and it is beautiful to accept and love yourself fully. This is important with all facets of life, especially with creating art.
You are not your ego. The sun will still rise tomorrow whether you remember to set your alarm or not. We are all nothing, and because we are nothing, we hold the capacity to be everything.
Yitzi: Some of the biggest names in Business, VC funding, Sports, and Entertainment read this column. Is there a person in the world, or in the US whom you would love to have a private breakfast or lunch with, and why? He or she might see this. :-)
Anyone and everyone. At this point in my life I realize we are all just a mirror in every situation we are in, the whole world is just a beautiful reflection to look into. Excited every moment I get to look into another set of eyes and see myself in them. May we all feel that same sentiment.
Yitzi:This was very inspiring. Thank you so much for joining us!
Thank you!! Absolute pleasure. Wishing all the best!
