“Keep Your Family First! No One Will Have Your Best Interests In Mind Like Them” Words Of Wisdom With Jess Hilarious

“I have always been able to trust my family. I know for sure now that if all else fails they will give me their honest opinion even if I don’t want to hear it.”
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jess Hilarious. Jess is a Stand-Up Comedian who is best known to television viewers for her appearances on season 9 of MTV’s Wild N Out as well as various shows on VH1, BET, and more. She first came to popularity through her Instagram comedy skits, which have amassed over 2.9 MILLION followers to date. A hard working Mom, she often includes her young son Ashton in videos and her segment “Jess With The Mess” is a social media sensation. Her comedy is smart and to the point. When it comes to the funny Jess holds NOTHING back.

Thank you so much for doing this with us! What is your “backstory”?

I’m from Baltimore, daughter to Robin and Kevin, I am often called “My dad’s twin.” I have two siblings and am the classic “middle child”. I’m a comedian but a mom to my son first.

Have always been an entertainer, I loved dancing and singing and being funny! Before I was Jess Hilarious. I had a normal 9–5 but I knew I didn’t want to work for anyone for the rest of my life. I was doing my videos and knew that this could go sooo right if I put the time in. So, I left my job and took a leap of faith. I knew I would be successful in videos but, of course, I still needed to have an income. I started doing stand up, I was already doing appearances for clubs but stand up was where the money was and I truly enjoyed it and here I am today with over 2.9 Million followers on social.

Can you share the funniest of most interesting story that happened to you in the course of your career?

About three months into doing stand up I got a call from Martin Lawrence! He wanted me to open for him. It was the biggest moment thus far for me.

How have you used your success to bring goodness to the world?

I have been able to take care of my family. Family is the biggest thing to me and to be able to do things for them and to see the smile on my son’s face means the world to me.

I have also been able to be a voice for my city, bringing awareness to the school system there.

If someone would want to emulate your career, what would you suggest are the most important things to do?

Don’t do what I did, follow your own path. Everyone has their own lane and own success story. What worked for me just might not work for another, follow your instincts.

So what are the most exciting projects you are working on now?

Most of the exciting projects I am working on are not public yet but I have a sitcom with major network on the horizon and a very cool movie that I am excited to be a part of. This is just the beginning.

What are your “5 things I wish someone told me when I first started” and why. (Please share a story or example for each.)

1.Don’t be too trusting ex. Entertainment insiders, friends, business opportunities will be looking out for their best interests, not yours.

2.Everyone who wishes you well and wants a hand in your journey does not always have good intentions, snakes in the grass is the best way to put it. ex. I have old friends who’ve tried to hang around me for the fame and for the person who I used to be.

3.Don’t be so quick to say yes and you don’t have to say yes to EVERYTHING!!! ex. I’ve jumped at so many opportunities that didn’t work out well or were not a good business move in the first place.

4.Always trust your gut, it will not steer you wrong. ex. I’ve been saved many times from bad business opportunities because it didn’t feel RIGHT to me and I trusted my gut.

5.Keep your family first! No one will have your best interests in mind like them. ex. I have always been able to trust my family but I know for sure now that if all else fails they will give me their honest opinion even if I don’t want to hear it.
