Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
Whether you know it or not, we all desire each of the five steps shown below.
As a lover of motivation, I have become fascinated by Maslow’s theory and began to critique myself based on the pyramid. During the examination of my life, I realized that society has made it rather difficult for people to reach the goal of self-actualization. Self-fulfillment is a component of life that we all seek, yet so many of us never grasp it.
Although most Americans are blessed with the physiological needs, adequate amount of rest is often ignored. Life becomes stressful and tiresome without fulfilling the needs at the base of the pyramid. When we don’t possess physiological needs, it is difficult to move up Maslow’s pyramid.
No matter the risk tolerance, people crave protection and the feeling of safety in life. Although it differs from person to person, Maslow believes we all look to escape fear. Factors such as financial needs, personal wellness, and overall safety are crucial to obtaining this second step.
3. Love and Belonging
Following safety, the feeling of love creates a strong middle component of the pyramid. Even independent individuals crave the feeling of love and a sense that they belong. Whether it is family, friends, a relationship, or all of the above, these all create a sense of larger meaning within an individual.
Humans chase individualized goals in life but the need for fulfillment is rooted in us all. Without the confidence, self-love, and meaning, it is difficult to reach our desires. This sector of the pyramid relies on the steps below it and is crucial to the top of the pyramid.
I think of this final step as the top of Mount Everest. Everyone climbs through the steps of life and ultimately looks to maximize on their potential. Without the four steps below, self-actualization is unreachable and potential can’t be reached.
~Each sector of Maslow’s Pyramid relies on the one below and they are all closely connected. Keeping yourself in check and living by this pyramid can be a revolution in your life. Start applying your life to this theory and keep yourself in check. It is my hope that self-actualization is in store for all of us.
