Ordinary or Extraordinary? The choice is yours!

Open a newspaper and you will see people doing extraordinary things. From inventing mind-boggling gadgets to athletes making unimaginable records every day. We are often left wondering how do these people manage to achieve so much. After all, they are ordinary people, just like you and me.

Whereas in reality, they are little more than ordinary, they have got something extra. And when we add this ‘extra’ to their ordinariness, we get what they call — EXTRAORDINARY.

You know all of us can be extraordinary. The only catch is to realize that being extraordinary is a personal choice. It doesn’t depend on your title, gender, color, age or your sexuality. Anyone can be extraordinary or rather I should put it this way, anyone can choose to be extraordinary.

But how does extraordinary happen?

It starts with you. An ordinary person — young or old — doing an ordinary job on any ordinary day. And, then one day, he decides to do a little extra. To be something extra. Then he tries a little more extra. Little by little, day after day, the ordinary becomes extraordinary.

And that’s how extraordinary happens. If you aspire to become extraordinary, here are some pointers that can help you become one:

Find your extraordinariness

To become extraordinary, find your extraordinariness. It means to find a niche where your strengths outnumber your weaknesses. A niche that excites and scares you at the same time.

First, decide if you want to be an extraordinary businessman, writer, parent or whatever. Then, put your heart and soul into it. Always remember, you’ve got everything what it takes to be extraordinary but it will take everything you’ve got.

For example, if you want to become an extraordinary business leader, think and act like one. And, if you ever struggle, ask yourself how an extraordinary leader would have handled the situation. You don’t have to do extraordinary things to be extraordinary. Just do ordinary things extraordinarily.

Spend some with yourself and contemplate. Make an effort to find your ‘extraordinariness’ every day because the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

Set ridiculously high standards

Most people underestimate what they can do — maybe you as well. This is why they settle for something that is mediocre, average or ordinary. But the fact is we are capable of accomplishing a lot more than what we think.

Underestimating our potential often comes in our way of becoming extraordinary. To overcome this, set insanely high standards. This will help you visualize a benchmark that matches to the world-class standard. This will propel you to be your best and push yourself harder. And you can go that extra mile where you wouldn’t have gone otherwise.

You know why extraordinary people set ridiculously high standards because even if they fail, they will fail above everyone else’s success.

Setting the bar high from the beginning itself is the way to become extraordinary.

Stretch your comfort zone

Let me tell you that the transition from ordinary to extraordinary is uncomfortable and at times — painful. But always remember whatever you seek from life is on the other side of discomfort. It’s important to stretch your comfort zones to be at your best self.

Extraordinary people challenge themselves — every single day. Although, no one likes the process of putting themselves into uncomfortable situations but extraordinary people do it anyway. They know that’s the price they have to pay to be extraordinary.

They proactively take action to do stuff that scares them. So, they take baby steps to enter a world which is scary but never let fear to come in the way to become extraordinary.

Visualize your future

One thing that is absolutely required to become extraordinary is to have 100% conviction to become one. If you can visualize yourself as one of the extraordinary, you’ve already won half the battle.

Don’t let anyone influence or manipulate you that you can’t become extraordinary. Be relentless. Be stubborn. Be obsessed to become extraordinary. Never be satisfied with anything but extraordinary. And learn to control your mind to tackle obstacles in front of you. Also, train your mind to see the best in everything.

Always remember in order for you to become extraordinary, you will have to make some sacrifices. This could be a sacrifice of time, money, relationships, or comfort level. Then ask yourself what price are you willing to pay and then pay the price. I’m sure it will be worth the effort.

Anyone can become extraordinary — both in personal and professional lives. It just comes down to asking yourself this simple question: What would an extraordinary business professional, leader, teacher, father or whatever you aspire to become do today? Then go and do it the extraordinary way.
