Sitting All Day Is Unhealthy For Everyone, But Especially Men
A new study suggests men are more negatively affected by sitting than women.
A recent study published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that the more time you spend sitting, the more likely you are to be obese — especially if you’re a man. Researchers measured how much time 4,486 men and 1,845 women — between the ages of 20 and 79 — spent sitting at work, school or home and recorded the size of their waistlines and body fat percentage.
Lead researcher Carolyn E. Barlow said, “Men who sat were more likely to be obese, and that held even when we adjusted for their fitness level.”
The solution? Get moving. Even moderate exercise throughout the day can help counterbalance the negative effects of sitting, such as walking periodically throughout the day. Ulf Ekelund, a professor at the Norwegian School of Sports Sciences released a study in 2016 that suggests this helpful metric: for every four hours you sit, try to move for at least 30 minutes.
