Speaking, Living and Loving Our Truth | It’s Our Time to Rise
Did you watch the Golden Globes? Even if you didn’t, you probably saw Oprah’s speech doing the rounds on social media. It got so many shares because it touches on a nerve that is raw for so many of us.
“What I know for sure is that speaking your truth is the most powerful tool we all have. And I’m especially proud of and inspired by all the women who have felt strong enough and empowered enough to speak up and share their personal stories.” — Oprah Winfrey
There was so much more to Oprah’s speech — in fact, it was one of the most rousing and memorable I have heard in a long time. So I won’t quote the whole thing, it’s better to watch the video as Oprah really says it best.
Her words landed so strongly with me as I have felt for some time that we are just on the cusp of a new movement; one of self-love, self-respect, and authenticity. It’s great to hear other people saying this too.
So, have you felt the change in the air?
Things have been shifting for a while, and it feels as though we are only going to get more and more open and real from this point forward.
Twenty, even ten years ago, I couldn’t have imagined living authentically. I was trapped in my societal conditioning, and busy maintaining the outward appearance of who I believe I was ‘supposed’ to be in the world. And that’s not the same as who I actually was.
I stifled my creativity because “music isn’t a real career” — according to my conditioning. After an impromptu vocal performance in a dreamy nightclub in St. Tropez, France, exhilarated but confused, I was ready for my life to be over. No, I wasn’t drunk or drugged. I was so blissed out from temporarily living the life I really wanted, that I didn’t want to go on living the miserable life I had before.
It is absolutely stop-you-in-your-tracks dumbfounding how the briefest of glances at who you really are, who your soul wants you to be, shatters the illusion of your societal programming.
When you realize that your ‘shoulds’ are nothing more than armor, keeping the rest of the world from judging your real self, you begin to question everything. At least, that’s how it was for me.
So, if you’ve had a glance of your authentic self, or, if like the women that Oprah referred to in her speech, you are ready to say “no more” and share your truth with the world, then the obvious question is this — “what on earth do you do now?”
And the answer? I believe the answer is to get to know yourself, love yourself, accept yourself, and live the life your soul wants for you. This is what I spoke about in my TEDx.
And how is that done? It all starts with awareness, ownership, and bravery. We need to know we have a change to make. We need to take ownership of the conscious decision to stand up and say “no more”. And we need the bravery to do the work, the personal growth, and to share our truth.
And you know what? Once you really get there, you don’t need the external approval anymore. So your old shield made of ‘shoulds’ becomes completely pointless. Cast it off — you won’t need it again!
Once you start walking in your truth there is no going back. Along my journey to overcoming depression and conformity I’ve seen that once the lights have been turned on you can see so much more. As we one-by-one begin waking up to our authentic truths, the self-love movement grows.
I, for one, am so excited to be a part of it. If this resonates with you then I would love you to come on this journey with me. I invite you to join my Facebook group here — there’s strength in numbers.
Want to go deeper? There are tools, resources, and masterclass invites available too. Begin with my book, I Love You, Me, where I’ve shared both my personal journey with self-love, and my tried and tested process to help you.
Need more inspiration? I’ve recently published a book with 29 authors who have all been through different journeys, but to the same destination of living their authentic truth, some very bravely against the odds. There are extra resources available here too. Take a look at Time to Rise here.
If and when you are ready to shed your shield and live from your soul, I will be cheering you on. Times are changing and I’m ready for what that brings!
