Student of Life

Be open to new ways of doing things.

Progress is impossible without Change

A week ago on Monday my daughter suggested that we take a different route in an effort to bypass the bad traffic we were stuck in. I hesitated and told her that the route she’s suggesting will take us off-course and not where we are supposed to go. She insisted and confidently explained where this route is going to take us standing her grounds. I got a bit irritated, firstly we left home early to avoid traffic that we are finding ourselves in, now we are stuck in a bumper to bumper traffic that is moving at a snail pace, we are running late for school and work on a Monday, first day of the week and my eight year old daughter is all emotional about this new route that she wants us to try…I’m like really I don’t need this right now! (I looked at her on the rear mirror silently thinking to myself when did she become a driver and how does she know about this route!). Oh well to calm the situation I promised her that we will take the route next time just not today.

So finally I decided to try this new route and guess what, yah I know she was right. She actually saved us a good 10 minutes of getting stuck on the road. You should have seen the victory smile on her cute face when she said:

“I told you mama, I was right, I’m sure you are proud of me!”

Me: “Oh yes my Angel, you were right and I was wrong, I’m sorry. Mommy’s very proud of you. Thank you!”

This experience reminded me that in life we will always be student of this syllabus called: Life

How many times have you convinced yourself that you knew something…and all of a sudden someone else who perhaps, is much younger than you or even less experienced than you, prove you wrong? I think some of us can relate to this scenario one way or the other both in our personal and professional lives.

The only thing that is constant in this life is change. Change is inevitable it is part of our daily lives; therefore we need to equip ourselves and prepare our minds to deal with change rather than fight it. No one wants to fight a losing a battle, it’s not a wise thing to do, and one of the strengths that human beings possess is adaptability and flexibility. We should not resent sudden requests or unforeseen detours. We must expect them because they are certain.

Everyone brings a unique life experience to your life and business for that matter. Make a habit to be open-minded and embrace change because everyone is a change agent. All people are creative in some way, involve them, and learn from them. We learn every day from everyone.

Embracing change in work and life is essential to growing as an individual and being a better person than who you were yesterday.

“Change is hard at first, messy in the middle and gorgeous at the end.” — Robin Sharma

Question to ponder on:

How open are you to new ways of doing things, new ideas and new way of thinking?
