The Art of Communication: Brevity = Impact
Communication is undoubtedly the key component in leadership and the most misunderstood. This is partly because, we’ve been communicating since we’re toddlers. So, once we learn words, figure out how to string words into sentences and get grammar right, we consider ourselves communication experts in our own right. That’s like saying I have a Canon 5D Mark 2, therefore I am a photographer.
Vocabulary and grammar are the starting point to get communication going.
Just like you need a good subject for a great shot, you need an idea worth communicating for great communication.
The decision to communicate is equally important. Sometimes you might consider replacing communication with something else like planning or action.
Communication is not an end in itself but a means to an end.
So, it is imperative to communicate with the end result in mind. Also, given that we’re not omniscient, it is wise to stay open to other perspectives, just in case there’s a better way (Maybe this is the one millionth twenty thousandth time you’re mistaken!)
It is said that a small, high-clarity, high-colour diamond can cost more than a large, low-clarity, low-colour diamond. So it is with communication. A few well chosen, well-timed words will accomplish more than paragraphs and essays.

In conclusion, every email, every look and every word has an impact on your audience. Make sure you’re impacting them the right way. You can increase the impact exponentially by being succinct.
Ensure your actions line up with your words, if you’d like to be taken seriously. The fastest way to lose credibility is to say one thing and do the opposite. Communication is one of the most important aspects of leadership branding. Make sure to get it right. Your audience will thank you for it.
