The Hidden Power of Being Personally Responsible
3 Tools to Get You Started Today
What if you never had to think about money again? What would your life be like if you paid off all your debt, owned your own home, had a consistent flow of money with a growing savings? What if you could plan for taxes, retirement, travel and unexpected disturbances with ease?
Would it surprise you if I told you that you can have all that and more? Would you instantly start thinking of all the reasons why I was wrong? Okay go ahead. Write them down, list them out and get them off your chest. I know you want to Eunice! So, take a moment and live right there.
Now tell me how you feel. Hopeless? Oppressed? Sad? Angry? Frustrated? Annoyed? Mad? Irate? Enraged? Outraged?
Okay, I’ll stop now. But you get the picture. Allowing yourself to live there — — in that place of excuses and justification — is exactly why you are stuck. It’s called giving away your personal power.
But I have good news! Exciting news! The BEST news of your day! I’m not wrong. We are all capable of it. If you can dream it, you can do it. If it is in you as a desire of your heart, then YOU have the power to make it happen.
Do you doubt me? Well, let me give you an example from my own life. I have literally had a lifelong dream of living near the ocean. Any ocean. Since the first time I smelled the ocean at 16 years old. I remember it more clearly than I remember almost anything else from my childhood.
My parents had divorced the year before and my Granny declared she was taking my sister and I to VA beach. We had never been to see the ocean and she thought that was a travesty. So, the three of us set out in her new car and off we went. Boy was that an adventure. Shewee, could I tell you stories. But the important part here is the feeling that came over me when we were crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and heading into the tunnel to get to Norfolk. I smelled that ocean and it was like music to my nostrils. I immediately felt the call. The pull. The desire to be near the ocean. My BIG dream was born.
Fast forward 30 years. Guess what, I was still living in WV. I was still harboring my BIG dream of living near the ocean and only visiting periodically. I convinced myself that was enough. One day about a year ago, it struck me that I was living my dream life. Building my coaching business, working part-time and creating the exact life I wanted……. but I wasn’t living the whole dream. I was STILL missing that ocean. That day, I decided that I was moving to FL. It didn’t matter that I was making less money than I had ever made in my life. It didn’t matter that my family and friends were all in WV. What mattered to me was that I get to decide how to live my life……and I wanted to be near the ocean.
That wasn’t selfish. That wasn’t me making foolish choices. That wasn’t about anything more than me taking personal responsibility for my life and making a decision to change. Once I did that, things started to fall into place.
· I found a better paying PT job that allowed me to work from anywhere.
· I found the niche for my business that put me right smack dab in the middle of my zone of genius.
· I sold my house in a down market at the price I wanted.
· I rented a new home with a pool that is just a few miles from the beach.
What did I do to create all those things? I’ll tell you first what I DIDN’T do.
× I didn’t win the lottery
× I didn’t get an inheritance from some distant relative (or even a close relative)
× I didn’t max out my credit cards
× I didn’t get a bunch of personal loans
× I didn’t meet Prince Charming who swooped in and carried me off to the beach on his trusty steed (but boy oh boy, I’m expecting to meet him now that I’m here on equal footing with him, YES!)
What I did do, on the other hand, is something that anyone can do. You included!
I took personal responsibility for my dream and I made it happen. When I did that (and this will happen for you too!) the magic began to happen. I love how Brendon Burchard describes it. He says: “When we are more personally responsible for our own lives; life blooms.” Whoa. And sister I’m here to tell you that it does! It freaking starts blooming all over the place!
Listed below are some steps that you can get started on today.
Decide — I decided I was moving to the beach and I told everyone that would listen. I owned it. I went for it, like there was NO question that it would happen. What is your dream? Are you owning it?
Take Action — I began to take action immediately by calling a realtor to see what needed to happen in order to sell my house. More than taking action, I had to let go of some things that were getting in my way so that I could continue to take action. I let go of things like my belief that I was stuck in WV and my fear of what people would think of me. Those things were keeping my desire hidden and keeping me from taking action. What is taking your attention away from your goal? Are you taking consistent action?
Believe — I believed 100% that I could and would do what I set out to do. It wasn’t all roses and lollipops….it was a lot of hard work. But all the time I just kept my eye on the prize and kept going. I created an energy of belief around myself that spilled over to everyone and everything around me so that they too believed and helped move me toward my goal. Are you living in belief? Are you opening it up and letting it energize you and everyone around you?
When I’m working with my one-on-one clients, these are the things I help them with. It doesn’t matter if they want to clear debt, find money to start a business or even plan for tax time. I work with my clients to change how they think and feel about money so that they can step into their power and take personal responsibility for their goals, which results in them finding the courage to take action toward and believing in their dreams. And then I am awed to see the blooming in their lives, like being able to pay off debt faster, saving with ease and enjoying their favorite luxuries more.
