The Most Peaceful Business Card I’ve Ever Received

Credit: The Avatar Course

As I finished giving a lecture about Epic Freelancing two weeks ago, an unassuming, middle-aged woman from the audience came up to me and handed me a colorful, cartoon-like card.

“I won’t take too much of your time,” she said to me, “but I just wanted to give this to you.”

Avatar — The Compassion Project was written on the front of it.

I was perplexed, but thanked her anyway for attending my lecture, and stuffed the card in one of my pockets.

Later that night, as I went through all of the business cards I collected from the lecture, I came across this one.

“What the heck is this?” I asked myself, opening the folded card and skimming the inside.
“Increase the amount of compassion in the world.”
“Compassion Exercise”
“Instructions: This exercise can be done anywhere that people congregate (airports, malls, parks, beaches, etc.). It should be done on strangers, unobtrusively, from some distance. Try to do all five steps on the same person. Expected results are a personal sense of peace.”
“Who the hell has time for this Looney Tunes business?” I thought.

STEP 1: With attention on the person, repeat to yourself: Just like me, this person is seeking happiness for his/her life.

STEP 2: With attention on the person, repeat to yourself: Just like me, this person is trying to avoid suffering in his/her life.

STEP 3: With attention on the person, repeat to yourself: Just like me, this person has known sadness, loneliness and despair.

STEP 4: With attention on the person, repeat to yourself: Just like me, this person is seeking to fulfill his/her needs.

STEP 5: With attention on the person, repeat to yourself: Just like me, this person is learning about life.

And then, just like that, the expected results hit me: a personal sense of peace.
