The One Life Hack That Will Add Years To Your Life

We do this hundreds of times a day and don’t even realize we are poisoning our own future success.

When asked to define profanity in 1964, former Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart famously stated that he could not describe it and added, “But I know it when I see it” (Jacobellis v. Ohio, 1964).

Cursing people today is more common than blessing them. We do it out loud, under our breath, by shaking our fist, and, on occasion, with a good old fashioned sign language gesture. (Which in translated, “up yours!” Or something like that.) We do it hundres of times a day and don’t even realize we are poisoning our own future.

Most Laws of Life unanimously agree that we reap what we sow. We get back what we put out. What goes around comes around. When you curse someone, you’re not hurting them; you are hurting yourself.

Life’s Like A Boomerang.

Life is like a boomerang. Everything you throw out comes flying right back at you. What we put out into the Universe eventually comes speeding back on a head-on collision course with our own life. You can ruin your own success, your own life force, your creative energy, by cursing people.

Scientist were able to demonstrate this by using neuroimaging techniques such as PET (positron emission tomography) scans. They discovered that a small part of our brain, called the amygdala, is highly active when exposed to threatening words (Isenberg, 1999). The amygdala is part of the limbic system, one of the primitive parts of the brain responsible for processing emotion and memory. In particular, amygdala activity is correlated with negative emotional associations; stimulating the amygdala can cause panic attacks and aggressive behaviors…,(Zald, 2003; Davis, 2001).

If you pay close attention, when you throw the word “motherf — — -” at the guy who cuts you off on the freeway, or fling the f-bomb at the women who jacks your parking space or cuts in line in front of you, you can feel the fiery poison seeping through your veins sucking every last ounce of love and creativity from your soul and spirit.

Your heart starts racing, palms start sweating, and, for a split second, you forget about your two-year old and four-year old in the back seat. Sometimes you can even find yourself whipping back on the freeway racing seventy miles out of your way just to give the jerk a piece of your mind, before you snap out of your freakin frenzy. (sounds like I’m very experienced in this doesn’t it?)

Live Longer and Prosper

Do you want to live a long and prosper? Don’t curse the one who takes your parking space, or the one who doesn’t give you a chance to pull out, or the one who doesn’t give a rip about whether you were inconvenienced by their inconsiderateness, bless them.

It’s one of Life’s hardest lessons to learn — to return love for hate, but one, when learned, releases blessings upon you and your future that defy logic and human reasoning. Bless those who curse you. It’s the one life hack that will add years to your life.
