Things to do that will help you become happier at work

You might have heard people saying — do more of what makes you happy. But, I’ve a little different thinking. I believe that if you are happy, you will automatically do more of whatever you are into. After all, your happiness, hormones and productivity are all interlinked.

Now comes the important point — what can you do that can help you become happier at work? There’s plenty of things you can do to be happier at work -

1. Choose happiness

Life is all about choices. You are what you choose to be. So, why not choose happiness over sadness? Happiness is a conscious choice. It lies in your perspective — the way you look at things.

The first thing you need to do is choose happiness. Make some tough but right choices to stay away from negative people. Avoid people who are focussed on gossiping around, and keep company of people who bring a sense of positivity along with them. Choose to be involved in things that make you happy, even though they might be out of your KWAs.

2. Do something that makes you happy

Building on from the last sentence in the above paragraph, I advise you to try to be part of something that makes you happy, everyday! There is a reason you are into the job you are currently working at. It might not be something that you enjoy doing, but you cannot change it after all it pays the bill.

But, you certainly can do something in the hours you have after work. After all, the real hustle to make your life better starts after you finish the 9 to 5 job! Participate in groups, activities and things that make you happy. It could be anything — from writing poetry to being involved in charity work to joining dance classes and what not.

3. Reward yourself

Receiving a gift from someone makes me go crazy like a kid. So, I came up with the idea to reward myself for every small or big accomplishment in life. Whether it is completing the project on time or achieving a personal milestone, I generally present myself with rewards. Rather than waiting for your boss or manager or someone else to reward for it, choose to do it yourself!

Here’s how you can go about it — choose an aim, and then pick a reward for it. For instance, last week I bought myself a designer watch I always yearned for on completing a successful project that got a five star feedback from client. It’s these small things that can bring true happiness, and inspiration to work.

4. Eat healthy, sleep well

Food and sleep — these two factors play decisive role in the happiness of an individual. Build a diet plan — you can gain knowledge by reading stuff online or simply getting in touch with a dietician. Based on your daily routine and the amount of physical and mental effort you put create a balanced diet plan — this can be the key to your happiness.

Along with good food, set a fixed time to sleep. Modern science says 7–8 hours of sleep daily is required to get the best out of your body. So, make a conscious effort to sleep on time, and it will soon become a habit that will help you break all your barriers of productivity.

5. Add colors to your life

This might sound a little out of the league, but it has given my happiness quotient a boost I never expected. Give your wardrobe a makeover. Add a splash of colors, get rid of those greys and blacks, and pick a few more colors for your wardrobe.

Bring in some green elements to your workstation — a small Bonsai tree on your table could work great in boosting your happiness and productivity. There are many studies that emphasize on the importance of greenery in de-stressing — so try it out and see the benefits for yourself!

6. Stay physically fit

A sound mind lives in a sound body. You might have all the monetary perks and amenities of the world, but all that cannot bring the happiness you deserve unless you have a physically fit body to enjoy them. That’s why the most important step you need to take to become happier in life, and inspired at work is to start working out.

It does not have to be a strenuous workout at a gym or fitness center. Even cycling for 30–45 minutes a day or a run in the park for the same duration can rejuvenate your body and get rid of the toxins. Remember — physical fitness does not always mean having six pack abs or a masculine body — it means being physically active!

7. Practice gratitude and be grateful

Whenever someone talks about gratitude these words echo in my mind — “The key to energy is Gratitude, truly truly Gratitude. The more thankful you are the more energy you get.” Do you know who said these words? Terry Crews — an american actor, and an ex-football player who was also one of the names included in the list of TIME Person of the Year for 2017.

Even science says that helping others and being thankful help in boosting happiness hormones in our body. So, practice being thankful for whatever you have in life, and you will see a sense of happiness creeping up in your life!

In the end it is all about being happy in life. Once you find the key to happiness, work satisfaction, productivity and everything else that matters starts to fall in its right place on its own. So, what’s stopping you from becoming happy? Get on with these tips and see the results they bring out for you!
