Today is the Greatest

Because it’s all there is when you get right down to it.

Today is a Smashing Pumpkins song. Here’s some lyrics:

Today is the greatest
Day I’ve never known
Can’t wait for tomorrow
I might not have that long

It’s true.

All we really have is today.

Yesterday’s gone.

Tomorrow’s always a day away.

So if we take the leap and say that today IS the greatest day, it shouldn’t matter if you’re at work or at play.

It’s all that there is.

My favorite quote sums it all up quite nicely.

The earliest instance of the quote is located in the 1932 book Education through Recreation by Lawrence Pearsall Jacks.

“A master in the art of living draws no sharp distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his education and his recreation. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence through whatever he is doing and leaves others to determine whether he is working or playing. To himself he always seems to be doing both. Enough for him that he does it well.”

So…

Go live today, for today, just today.

Microstep: Look around. Notice what’s there. Not on a screen, but right there, in front of you. Allow today’s view to be the greatest you’ve ever known.
