What I Learned When I Stopped Trying to Multi-task
My top 12 tips for getting the most out of life.
The french philosopher Rene’ Descartes famously said, “I think therefore I am”— he didn’t say, “I’m busy therefore I am”!
Over 100 years ago, Henry Ford observed that it was a distinct and observable part of the human condition to, “rush too much with nervous hands and a worried mind”.
To his way of thinking back then we were all intrinsically impatient — hard-wired to go-get — and he believed that someday we would come to know enough about human intelligence and the realm of the Spirit to create a deeper and more considered understanding of who and what we were and why we do what we do.
We mustn't let busyness get in the way. We need to get less busy, appreciating and understanding in the present moment, rather than being continually driven to do!
So, with fresh eyes and a free mind, let’s try to see life through a different lens and here are my Top 12 Tips to get the most out of living:
- single task rather than multi-task; when walking walk, when eating eat
- move slower than you would normally
- consistently choose to act deliberately, rather than randomly, or rushed
- become an active seeker after meaning
- figure out what’s important and let go of what’s not — Today!
- give everyone and everything your complete and full Attention
- don’t sweat the small stuff; and remember everything is small stuff
- don’t ever put off taking that 1st Step
- cultivate emotional awareness and become emotionally fit
- big-up your enthusiasm and practice compassion (both to yourself and others) each and every day
- be a genius and steal back your future; &
- don’t become Saint-Pol Roux’s ‘strophe’ in search of a ‘cata’
