What’s the Secret to Success?
I recently read an article by designer Tory Burch about how growing up playing sports, in particular tennis, helped her develop her successful fashion career. As an entrepreneur myself, I appreciated her analogy since I too grew up playing tennis, swimming and running.
Indeed, as she notes in her article, the key to success is to believe in yourself with passion, and never be afraid to take that first step onto the court, into the pool, up to the stage or whatever. Set your goal, get in the game and stay focused on excellence.
And, of course, don’t quit. It takes courage and tenacity to work through the tough times to get what you want. Don’t let the negative thoughts or challenges convince you otherwise. You’ll discover more about yourself than you ever knew, and in the process, develop new skills and confidence.
People who give up easily either don’t really see the value of what they are pursuing and/or they don’t have the confidence to see it through. First, believe in what you are doing so the time and effort it takes to make it happen is enjoyable, not drudgery. Once you put in the time and perseverance to do something, and you do it, you will start getting results that create the confidence you need to continue.
Find a qualified coach or mentor to help you stay motivated and provide insight. If you are going to get better at anything, learn from people who have the knowledge to help. And make sure she holds you accountable. It’s easy to quit when the only person we let down is our self.
And lastly, stay curious. Explore ways of getting things done. Find a way to reach the finish line. If you don’t succeed at something the first time you try it, don’t give up. Try it again, or do something different. Not everyone learns the same way so you need to mix it up.
Everyone that has experienced the satisfaction that comes with success knows that without conviction and courage to try new things and hang in there, you won’t win the prize.
