When you know it is the right time to leave an organization
Before starting my business, I worked a web designer for a few years. It was as exciting as it could be. I enjoyed every bit of it. But, there comes a time in life when you know you need to move on. There comes a point when you realize it is time to leave one place and move towards the other for good. The outcome, you cannot predict but at that moment it seems like the right decision.
So, how do you know it is the right time? This is something that varies from person to person. But I am going to share some tips here that will help you figure out when is the right time to leave an organization -

You feel a sense of drudgery
There’s a sense of excitement when you start a new job. If you are not in a job that you are passionate about you will soon start to feel that excitement fading. Even if you are in a job with no new challenges it is quite usual to find yourself stuck in this situation. This is precisely the time when you start to feel your work becoming a drudgery.
You are not able to commit yourself to the job fully under such a situation. By continuing to work with the company in such a situation you are not doing justice to the opportunity you have been provided by the organization. Hence you know it is time to either find something that can ignite the spark at work, or else you must move towards some place where you can justify the remuneration you are being offered by your employer.
You are not getting any feedback
Feedback, when provided and accepted, in its right spirit can do wonders to your growth. This holds true for both the employee as well as the employer. As an employee when you stop receiving feedback from your manager / leader you must take it as a warning sign of things going in the wrong direction. This is the time when you need to take charge of the situation and discuss things with the respective authorities to see if there’s something that could be done. And, if you still think things are not changing it is time to do the tough, but right thing i.e. to move on.
You are no longer valued in the company
How do you get to know when you are no longer valued in a company? You are no longer invited to speak in meetings which were earlier incomplete without you. You are burdened with tasks, which could easily have been handled by someone with less experience than you. You are constantly poked for doing things which you were doing earlier as well, but no one really bothered then.
These are just a few of the signs that reflect things are no longer the same at office than what they used to be earlier. This is what signifies that it is time to move on. After all, there is no point in being part of a company that does not value your efforts.
You don’t align with the vision of your company
You started as someone who completely agreed to the vision of the company. But with time things start to change. What the company yearned to achieve a few years back is now a thing of the past. They are now moving in another direction, which is not wrong on their part.
But you don’t find yourself fit in their picture now. You feel left out, and hence you no longer feel the passion you had earlier towards your job. This can happen especially when you have been part of the company for a long time. In such a circumstance neither you nor the company is at fault. Both have their own goals, and hence need to move towards the direction that brings those goals closer. And, hence before the employer says so it is time to take the hard decision.
You cannot see a bright future
Lastly, the biggest sign that might compel you to leave your organization has to be when start to feel out of place in the current setup. You cannot really see what is going to be the future with the current organization — whether you will be able to survive yet another year with the company or not? If such doubts start to appear in mind, it is always a good thing to discuss with someone from your office whom you can trust. There can be a big chance that things might be not what you think they are.
Just in case you don’t get a satisfactory response from them, or they also have been going through a similar feeling, it is a clear indication of what the next step has to be. The next step has to be — to get out and explore what opportunities you can get in the market.
You have to think what’s right
Working with an organization where you are facing all these issues can be demotivating. In such situation, continuing to work together can be the worst decision. Not just for you, but it would be not good for the organization as well, because working without sincere efforts and with all these distractions could easily mean you are not able to give your best at work.
This is the reason that I say, in today’s competitive scenario you need to be dynamic enough to think about your personal growth. At the same time, it is the responsibility of a business leader to make sure that the employees are valued in the organization. Whether it is the chances of growth being crippled for the employees or them not feeling valued for their sincere efforts, a leader must not let such situations arise.
From a leader’s perspective
Being a leader myself, I have made peace with the fact that there are minute chances for every employee to stick with my dreams forever. There will come a time when their needs might not align with what I am willing to offer. Or, my needs won’t align with what they will be bringing to the job. I clearly understand this, and therefore the feelings are quite mutual. If they find better growth opportunities, they are welcomed with their decision.
Even if they think they can improve their skills, and continue to be part of ProofHub with new vigor and new skills they are more than welcomed to be with the business. What I don’t want is for them to take the job for granted, and continue to run the mill without showing any signs of growth for the business.
In the end, all I’d like to say is that if you want to be true to yourself and don’t want to get burdened under the guilt of getting paid while you were not doing justice with the job you are at, you will get to see the signs that is is time to move on yourself. And, that will be the day you will have to decide, which path to choose. Until that situation arises, continue to give your best where you are, and all the best!
