The Science of Sidekicks (Synthesis)
In this case, Mushu.
In “Mulan”, Mushu is the tiny red dragon that manages to get himself into a load of trouble when he has to go and bring Mulan back from the army. His original job was to wake up the Great Stone Dragon, but he ended up destroying its pedestal (and the statue, for that matter). In the end, despite him seeming to be unfit for protecting Mulan, he makes a very funny and heartwarming sidekick: “Mushu not only helped Mulan save China, but he is also ridiculously funny… Mushu taught us, even if you are the little guy, even if you have everyone telling you that you can’t, you have to believe in yourself and make it happen” (this quote came from this website).
Mushu happens to fall under the classic Jester archetype, usually defined as having the goal “to have a great time and lighten up the world”. Characters that are Jesters (otherwise known as Jokers) are also “likely to be careless and clumsy” for comedic effect (this information was found on this website). Mushu makes a very effective sidekick because his sense of humor combined with his quick wit make for funny scenes throughout the movie. He also has a big heart, which helps Mulan through some tough moments.
One of the things that makes Mushu a good sidekick is that he balances out some of Mulan’s traits. According to this website, “It’s the old opposites attract… Sidekicks are the yin to the protagonists’ yang. The contrast puts the protagonists’ characteristics into relief”. Where Mulan is earnest and often times soft spoken, Mushu is sarcastic and always has something to say. When Mulan is down, Mushu is there to cheer her up. However, they are both similar in key ways that help them relate to each other. They are both honest and care very much about the people they love.
Overall, Mushu was one character that made “Mulan” better. A good sidekick is always in order and Mushu is always the perfect dragon to help Mulan on her journey.
