So Kandao is a company that creates technology and software that allow you to take stereoscopic 3D 360° or 180° footage to view in VR. Kandao recently released the Obsidian camera — a camera with six cameras that not only takes 360° photography and video but also depth maps that match the RGB footage.

Now you can view these 360° 3D videos as holographic captures.

I don’t want to beat a dead horse here but, until now, viewing 360° 3D real world videos was something that you could only really do using a VR headset. Now you can share and show these captures in a Looking Glass, with software capable of interpreting the RGB video or image with its depth data, making it a hologram.

360° was originally meant for rotating headset heads. On a Looking Glass, you can pan around the image or video and zoom in and zoom out of different parts of the imagery. These interactions allow you to enjoy this real world capture of life, from six different angles.

Spinning with Endless Possibility

That old photo of your mom laughing towards a direction that isn’t in the frame? Imagine if you could just drag your finger on the image and rotate it in the direction she’s laughing at, and find the mysterious, hilarious culprit.

Since this imagination image is now in 360° 3D, it’s more alive and real — bringing you closer to this moment in your mom’s life that would previously only have been accessed through her memory. The possibilities of holographic 360° 3D photos and videos are rich, and lend themselves towards becoming true, historic relics of the world we live in.

*this is part of our “100 Days of Holograms” series, where we from Looking Glass Factory post one new wonderful or weird (or both!) use for the Looking Glass holographic display each day.
