The ThunderCore Iris hard fork Phase 1 has gone live on Mainnet at block height 82312803, which happened earlier today.
In the announcement blog post, we shared the important features of ThunderCore Iris, and how they will impact ThunderCore developers and users. The goal of this Iris network upgrade is to bring the latest EVM Istanbul features to ThunderCore and further lower the barrier of porting Solidity projects into the ThunderCore ecosystem.
Iris complements the performance and security upgrade introduced in the Soter hard fork in December 2020, and one of the most notable upgrades is that we’ve increased the entropy of the RNG(Random Number Generator) for better randomness generation.

The implication of this upgrade is that ThunderCore can now provide a better random number generation process, which is crucial for a fair dice roll or a coin flip in a game; or the randomness used in generative NFT artworks. Not only does this boost the security of the chain itself, but also the security of the numerous DeFi, NFT, and GameFi DApps on the ThunderCore blockchain.
Developers now have access to an even stronger source of randomness. Ultimately this creates a more exciting, transparent, and fairer user experience.
For the initiated, you might know that RNG solutions are actually very challenging to implement because of the numerous several security considerations you would need to take into account. For instance, if you were to use on-chain data like block hashes as a source of randomness, this can be easily exploited by the miners or the block proposers. If you were to use an off-chain RNG solution, these RNGs are often opaque and don’t provide users with proof about the integrity of the process, thus hard for developers and users to verify that the process is manipulation-free.
Now with the introduction of the Iris hard fork, ThunderCore will become one of the fastest, most secure, EVM-compatible, cross-chain ready, and developer-friendly public blockchains in the industry.
