The 16 Best Thunkable Apps of 2016
Made By Our Community of (Mostly) First-Time Developers
Thunkable (thunkable.com) is a free drag and drop platform where anyone can build their own mobile applications.
This past year, our community of Thunkers from around the world — many who are first time developers — built thousands of awesome apps.
In no particular order, here are the top 16 of 2016.
① Elevator Fun
Created by Fujio Yamamoto from Atsugi, Japan
To encourage his students to develop their own Android apps, Professor Fujio Yamamoto from the Kanagawa Institute of Technology built Elevator Fun. This app estimates your elevator’s next stop using your phone’s own acceleration sensor. A must have for elevator aficionados.
② Rock Paper Lizard Scissors Spock
Created by Domhnall O’Hanlon from Dublin, Ireland
A “nerdy take” on Rock-Paper-Scissors, Domhnall O’Hanlon’s “Rock Paper Lizard Scissors Spock” pits you against a tough AI, which tracks your score as you battle for glory.
③ Inside 2016: Latest Trends In India
Created by Nimesh Kumar from Delhi, India
A birdtastic adventure! Play as a hen and avoid distractions while trying to grab onto “jio” — the Hindi word for “living life”. It’s an addicting and philosophically deep game. Who’s grabbing jio in 2017?
④ Language Master
Created by Angelo from Naples, Italy
To help his son simultaneously learn six languages, self-taught programmer Angelo invented Language Master. The language lineup packs a Mike Tyson-sized punch of learning: French, Italian, English, German, Spanish and Polish. Become a ferocious language competitor!
⑤ iKiwi
Created by Mohamed Ibrahim from Chennai, India
Invented by 11th grade entrepreneur Mohamed Ibrahim, iKiwi is a virtual assistant that can be programmed to your personal needs. It also has “kiwi” in the name, which is a delicious fruit.
⑥ iChat
Created by Mohamed Ibrahim from Chennai, India
Mohamed back at it again! This time with iChat, an innovative communication app that includes collaborative doodling and real-time chat history. Tired of WhatsApp? Take a page from the Mohamed playbook and build your own version!
⑦ Andy
Created by Yusuf Deniz from Kocaeli, Turkey
Andy is a photo analysis app that analyzes your pictures for emotions and descriptions. Built by high school student Yusuf Deniz, Andy incorporates Microsoft’s powerful AI tools like Emotion and Image Recognizer. If your image doesn’t show up, you’re probably a vampire. Bravo, Yusuf!
⑧ Strum
Created by MIT 2.009 Yellow Team from Cambridge, MA, USA
The Thunkable team has a number of MIT alums, so we were pumped to see Strum, an app invented by 17 students from MIT’s 2.009 Product Engineering Processes class. Strum listens to a series of notes played on guitar, and transcribes each note on a digital tab. The app can also save these transcriptions and easily export them from your phone.
⑨ Voice Control for Arduino
Created by Junior Damacena from Aparecida de Goiânia, Brasil
Arduino is an open-source electronic prototyping platform that enables users to create interactive electronic objects. If that isn’t cool enough, student Junior Damacena invented Voice Control for Arduino, allowing users to control the platform with vocal commands. This app is in Portuguese.
⑩ Taschenlampe (Flashlight)
Created by Mika from Lenkersdorf, Germany
By day, Mika is road construction worker (read his amazing story here). Also by day, Mika builds super cool apps on Thunkable for his community. Taschenlampe turns your smartphone into a fully functional flashlight. It also uses one of Thunkable’s most powerful features, Extensions!
⑪ QR Code Scanner
Created by Mika from Lenkersdorf, Germany
Guess who’s back? Back again. Mika’s back, tell your friends….who are interested in QR Code Scanners. QR codes are two-dimensional barcodes that can be scanned to redirect you to specific pages. They are also HUUUUUGE in China. Mika’s version is super sleek.
⑫ Immunization Schedule
Created by Madan M from Davanagere, India
When Madan’s elder brother forgot to administer a vaccine to his six-year-old daughter, he knew technology could help. Immunization Schedule enables parents and health professionals to track immunization schedules and additional health information. If you’re interested in designing an app that helps remember key dates, be responsible like Madan, explore this app’s source code!
⑬ Self Care
Created by Marc Rice from Newcastle upon Tyne, England
As a quality improvement manager for the NHS — the UK’s national health provider — Marc Rice noticed that too many people were booking appointments for ailments that could be treated at home. Marc created Self Care, which provides patients with a wide variety of services and information to treat less severe illnesses. This app is currently being developed further for greater expansion!
⑭ PV — Solar Power System
Created by Anwar Al-Haddad from Sanaa, Yemen
By analyzing essential calculations and positioning, PV-Solar Power System helps optimize solar panel installation and efficiency. This app’s source code is a great foundation for Thunkers who are looking to simplify complex calculations.
⑮ Nefertiti+
Created by Kelvin Fosu from Accra, Ghana
Professional artist Kelvin Fosu built Nefertiti+ to help showcase his local business. The app uses a scrolling banner to promote positive messages. It’s a merry-go-round of positivity.
⑯ SuperTow+
Created by Kelvin Fosu from Accra, Ghana
With SuperTow+, an animated .gif (which isn’t currently formally supported on Thunkable) is created by alternating Images with a Clock Timer. Kelvin — who has come up twice now — is really excited to share his code so that the Thunkable community can create even better apps. Take a look!
Thank you to everyone who submitted entries and congrats to these amazing developers. You can make your own versions of these apps by starting with the source code listed with each entry.
If you have an app that you’d like to share with our community of Thunkers, send us a link to your source code (.aia) to us at bestapps@thunkable.com and we’ll send you a temporary tattoo with the design you see below.
Happy thunking.
