Devils at Kings: Losing in the Second Period for a Change
The Kings allowed five goals on 14 shots, which is an awesome game plan for people who love losing. Two of the goals belonged to Steve Bernier. Mike Cammalleri also scored, as is tradition. Two other people scored, but who cares? This is now the 13th game of the season where the Kings have allowed at least four goals.
THE GOOD
1) Dustin Brown tied the game 1–1 early in the second, breaking a 17-game goal drought. The set-up for it was really cool. Drew Doughty didn’t actually have a good game, but this moment was really nice.
It’s too bad that the Kings fell to pieces not long after this.
2) Marian Gaborik has scored goals in three straight games. Like Kopitar, he’s been picking up a lot of points lately.
3) People in Staples Center got ice cream thanks to Justin Williams scoring a very late goal, deflecting Mike Richards’ shot. Oh, and Brayden McNabb picked up two points. Third star in a losing game is sort of a bummer, though.
THE BAD
1) The Kings got a grand total of one shot on goal in three consecutive power plays during the first period. The had one more in the second period and did nothing with it.
2) After failing on three power plays, the Kings then gave up a late goal to the Devils on their first kill. The gave up another on their second kill. The PK has been ineffective for several weeks now.
3) Martin Jones had a great game against the Maple Leafs. Tonight, both he and Jonathan Quick saw ice time and finished with save percentages below .800. The Kings got out-done in scoring chances and their defense got really sloppy during the stretch where they allowed three goals in 68 seconds, but neither goaltender was able to step up and make huge saves tonight either.
4) Justin Williams still isn’t under contract.
We could pretend to draw conclusions on this game, but the Kings don’t care out there, so there’s no point in wasting my time either. Forget this.
