In honor of National Cat Day, it is only fitting to talk about pussies!
Personally, I cringe every time I hear someone refer to a vulva or vagina as a “pussy.” To me, it seems degrading, especially since the word is oftentimes used when referring to someone as a coward, for example, “Quite being such a pussy dude.” However, there are many people who do enjoy referring to their vulvas and vaginas as pussies and say that the word is empowering and even sexy. Regardless of how you personally feel, in honor of National Cat Day, I decided to do some research on the word “pussy” and its euphemism for a vagina.
During 19th century America, a number of euphemisms were devised in order to avoid discussing sex and sexuality in public. Just as ass became donkey and cock became rooster, vagina became “pussy.” The term “pussy” came to refer to anything soft or furry such as a pussycat or those soft pussy willow plants. Since women’s vulva are typically soft and furry the term spread and stuck.
To be honest, I grew up with dogs and was never really a cat person, but in doing some research I have gained a new found appreciation for cats and more importantly am beginning to understand just how similar cats and vaginas may actually be:
Both pussies are extremely clean
Cat Fact: Cats spend nearly 1/3 of their waking hours cleaning themselves.
Vagina Fact: Vaginas are self-sufficient and naturally self-cleaning. There is very little to do when it comes to keeping the vagina clean because vaginal discharge is the body’s natural cleaning process.
Both pussies are very sensitive to vibrations
Cat Fact: Cats are extremely sensitive to vibrations. Cats are said to detect earthquake tremors 10 or 15 minutes before humans can.
Vagina Fact: Vaginas are also sensitive to vibrations. In fact, research published in 2009 by The Journal of Sexual Medicine found that 52.2% of women aged 18–60, have used and enjoyed vibrators.
Both pussies are smart
Cat Fact: A cat’s brain is biologically more similar to a human brain than it is to a dog’s. Both humans and cats have identical regions in their brains that are responsible for emotions.
Vagina Fact: Whether your feeling excited, aroused, stressed or anxious, vaginas can pick up on those emotions. We can see those emotions expressed though lubrication, lack of lubrication, soreness, bacterial infections etc. Vaginas are smart and very intuitive and it is important to listen to them.
Both Pussies are magical
Cat Fact: One of the most famous cats is the Cheshire Cat in Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. With the ability to disappear, this mysterious character embodies the magic and sorcery historically associated with cats.
Vagina Fact: The birthing process- enough said. That’s pretty powerful and magical stuff.
Although I’m still not quite sure I will personally begin referring to my genitals as “my pussy,” in learning some new and interesting cat facts today, I have become a bit more comfortable with the term. So, whether you want to cuddle with your animal cat today, or the cat between your legs, celebrate today right by show all the cats of the world some love. Here’s to cats, kittens, “pussies” and pussy willows- Happy National Cat Day
