Have you ever… paid the ‘Fan Tax’?

If you have ever been to Mumbai, India than you will know what I refer to when I say: ‘Skin Tax’.

The ‘Skin Tax’ is what funnily Mumbai guides refer to as the extra charge that Western Tourist pay when they are purchasing something. It is common practice in facts that local seller offer higher prices to everyone to all Westerners which are know to have more financial means and are not that used to bargaining.

But if in India you end up paying 500 rupee (almost 7€) for a T-shirt that a local would have paid no more than 100 (a bit less than 1.5€), which is five times the price, but still absolutely cheap if compared to the Western-World-prices; that is not quite what happens in the ticket secondary market.

The Ticket Secondary Market: The Plague of Touting

If you have ever tried to buy online tickets for life events you must have experienced the frustration of not being able to buy them in the primary market as they have sold out too fast and facing the choice of not going or paying many times the price of the ticket in the secondary ticket market.

The reasons why the prices are so high might be genuine high interest, but another reason is so called Touts. A term that has made headlines since the Channel 4 Documentary “Viagogo, The Great Ticket Scandal” was released in 2012. On that moment, Europe opened their eyes to what is happening in the Ticket Secondary Market. A market populated of the so-called touts, persons or professionals who buy up tickets for an event to resell them at a profit. When tickets are being bought up in large numbers, using automatic Bots, the Touts can often dictate the market and prices for the best tickets.

Touting is a phenomenon a lot similar to the Indian ‘Skin Tax’. As in India the sellers apply a ‘Skin Tax’ to all the Westeners, in the ticket secondary market Touts apply ridiculous mark-ups to the face value and basically make fans pay a ‘Fan Tax’, by hijacking the initial sale for the most popular events and ticket types. Ticket brokers can in many cases have an important role in getting tickets distributed in the secondary market. This is especially the case for cross border transactions. However, buying up tickets when it goes on sale, has no other purpose other than serving the interest of the ticket tout, and limiting the access of affordable tickets to real fans.

The solution:

As we did get tired of it, we decided that enough was enough and created our own platform where to grant real fans access to fair prices.

Ticombo grants fair pricing by capping prices. All the tickets on sale must be sold at Face Value or less if the ticket type is still available from the original primary seller, and can be sold to up to double (not more) the price when sold out. We believe this is a fair balance considering interest of both Seller and Buyer. If a ticket is sold over Face Value the listing will be flagged so that the users is always informed of what he or she is paying for. This way we make sure that sellers are not profiting unfairly out of the real fans, and we make sure that real fans is fully informed of face value and do not have to pay the ‘Fan Tax’. In addition Ticombo do not accept professional resellers or so called Touts using automatic Bots. If we suspect such activites, we will immidately suspend the Seller and any listings.
