5 Tips for Creating a Better Resume
1. Proofread
Seemingly obvious, but you’d be surprised by how many applicants don’t seem to bother looking over their resume once they’ve decided it’s finished. The errors don’t go unnoticed, and if you can’t put effort into making sure your job of applying is done properly, you’re not proving to an employer that you’ll put the effort into making sure your future tasks are completed with care. It’s never a bad idea to have a friend act as a fresh pair of eyes and give some advice along the way!
2. Keep it short
Recruitment is unbelievably time-consuming, so it’s important that you make the most of the time a prospective employer is going to spend reading about your experience and accomplishments. The maximum length your resume should be is two pages. Having said this, don’t be shy about going into detail about your most relevant experience.
3. Keep it organised
Subtitles are your friends! Keeping your resume neat is one of the best ways to keep a recruiter reading. Grouping things like education, work experience, volunteer experience, and various qualifications will allow your prospective employer to find what they’re looking for quickly and easily (especially on a second read-through).
4. Avoid creating a task list
Instead of building a list of each odd job you undertook at previous posts, think of a resume as a skill list as opposed to a task list. For instance, if you were previously a tutor: turning something like, “Tutored children aged 10–13 in various subjects,” into, “Organised personal study plans and facilitated regular meetings with students aged 10–13,” goes a long way. Using “skill words” such as “organised” sends the message that you are just that!
5. Keep your material relevant
Tailoring your resume to each position you apply to will give you the best shot at getting the interview you’re looking for. Make sure to include as much relevant experience as you can under each subheading; if you’ve got business experience and are applying to a business position, it would be a good idea to mention that know-how somewhere! That being said, you will come out of each job with unique soft skills that are most likely transferrable to your next, so incorporate the relevant skills as much as the relevant experience.
Having a good resume is vital when you’re searching for a job considering it’s one of the first things a potential employer will see when deciding whether or not to hire you.
