It’s not so much the growing pools of squalor and poverty in plain sight (amongst all the richness) that define urban California nowadays (although that’s definitely a big part of it), it’s the general indifference to it all (one way or another) that allows it to grow and grow that’s defining.
Like the fires, or the drought, it’s just one more thing to put up with on your daily rounds while taking pride in California’s progressiveness.
