After losing an infant child, Anandibai Joshee realized the urgent need for adequate medical care in India. So, she left her rural home and journeyed to America for a medical degree. When she returned—though she died of tuberculosis at just 21—she brought back the idea that women could practice Western medicine, which remains her lasting legacy.

This video is part of a series produced in partnership with the South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA).
