Written on the back of this image: “Here are homeless, jobless, destitute men splitting kindling at the Salvation Army woodyard, a Community Chest agency, at 864–868 Harrison street. They receive meals at the soup kitchen and beds in an adjoining dormitory. When the dormitory capacity is reached, they welcome shelter under or on top of benches and even on the concrete floors.”
