Emperor Norton is the stuff of folk legend in San Francisco, mostly for his ability to turn his dotty delusions into a successful way of life in the post-Gold Rush era. As a failed businessman who re-invented himself as an emperor (in his own mind), he seemed to amuse the public, who not only tolerated him but supported him. When he died, San Franciscans turned out in droves for his funeral.
