The creators of Extraño at DC Comics were breaking with the old “comics code,” an industry-wide form of self censorship, when they created the gay character as part of the New Guardians series. Of course, that doesn’t mean they broke with stereotypes about gay men (he called himself “Auntie,” for one…).
