As Western counterculture grew, many young people went on journeys East, seeking spirituality and alternatives to capitalism—or perhaps just some cheap, quality hashish. They called themselves freaks, and their path led through areas little known to Western tourists today: Iran, Afghanistan, the mountains of Pakistan, and the Kashmir Valley. Today, all that remains of the era are the aging hippies of Anjuna Beach in Goa, India.
