Marie Van Brittan Brown returned home from her nursing shifts at odd hours of the night. She lived in Jamaica, Queens, and she didn’t feel safe. So in 1966, she invented an ingenious home security system, and got a patent for it. The system’s design — though never produced — basically predicted the boom in home security systems in the decades to follow.
