The beautiful, remote steppes of eastern Kazakhstan are home to the Polygon, or Semipalatinsk, site, where the Soviet Union’s first nuclear tests occurred in 1949. The region is still recovering from radioactive fallout, but at least the plutonium that was left unguarded for decades has finally been cleaned up, thanks to a joint effort between the U.S., Russia, and Kazakhstan.
