When the U.S. Army commissioned famed director John Huston to make a documentary about the mental health of soldiers returning from World War II in 1945, it looked like post-traumatic stress disorder was finally going to be taken seriously. But the defense department buried the film for decades. It was just one of the many instances in which the real toll of war was left untold.
