Today, over 20 million people watch the Thanksgiving day parade on television. Started in 1924 as a Christmas Parade by the booming Macy’s department store to celebrate the store’s growth to a full city block, the parade was instantly a hit. But it was the giant balloons that made it a draw for audiences watching on little black-and-white television screens at home.
