Authored by a son of the Old South, The Turner Diaries would be on the trash pile of history’s poorly written books if it weren’t so effective at tapping into the violent fantasies of white nationalists — including Timothy McVeigh. William Luther Pierce wrote the book in 1978 under a pseudonym, and it’s crudely written diary format has been part of its appeal.
