Ans- Carbon is a versatile element because of the following reasons-

a. It is tetravalent- means it can form four bonds with four different atoms.

b. Catenation- the property because of which carbon can form bonds and long chains with other carbon atoms.

c. Multiple bonds- Carbon can form double and triple covalent bonds.

d. Isomerism- where two hydrocarbons have the same molecular formula but have different structures and hence different compounds are formed.

(Note-This will be covered further on in the topic)

Due to all these reasons, carbon forms a very huge number of compounds which makes it a very versatile element.
