How To: Not get killed fighting at close distances

So… you want to be a Time Raider?

You’re in luck, because this week, you will learn all about the types of weapons you’re going to encounter on your travels.

And today, we’re going to get up close & personal — short distance, close quarters. I’m Jason, one of the Time Raider Commandos, and you can read my file by clicking here: [REQUEST ACCESS]

Let’s cover the basics first. Close quarters combat can be dangerous, hectic, but also exciting! You’ll want a weapon that’s neither bulky nor heavy, so you’re able to move more effectively than your enemy. It’s all about movement, speed, and surprise.

Pistols: Compact, Concealable, Easy To Carry

Who doesn’t love pistols?

Although less powerful than a rifle, a good pistol will always have its place in combat. If something happens to your main weapon, your sidearm will always be there for you, ready for action.

As you’ll be heading into the second World War in your first missions, we should probably cover the most likely pistols you will encounter in that era.

The Colt 1911: Timeless Classic

A Classic in Chrome

There’s probably no gun more iconic than the Colt 1911: Sleek, powerful, and timeless. There’s a reason the US Army used it for over 100 years!

Some call it a hand cannon, and it certainly has a bigger calibre than most semi-automatic pistols — but I’ve never seen a cannon that’s this beautiful to look at.

You can’t go wrong with the 1911, but make sure to take good care of yours… I won’t forgive you if you don’t. Just look at it!

The Luger: Killing with Style

Give the bad guys a taste of their own medicine

Alright, yes. This is a weapon used by the Germans. The bad kind of Germans, if you know what I‘m talking about. WWI and WWII Germans, to be exact.

You can say a lot of bad things about them, I certainly enjoy taking them down when I happen to be in their time… but they do have a sense of style, don’t they?

The Luger certainly is a weapon most people would recognize anywhere, and just looking at it conjures up images of bad guys up to evil — so trust me, it’s a blast taking out those bad guys with this iconic gun. Just watch out a bit, the Luger can be unreliable at times.

The Cybergun: [CLASSIFIED]

Sorry rookie, you’ll have to wait for higher security clearance before I can give you the full intel on this beast.

Let’s just say… there’s a reason for that.

My father showed me ancient movies like Robocop and Judge Dredd, where the hero runs around with powerful handguns that demolish almost anything and everything they’re aimed at. John is a bigger fan of big guns than me, but damn, they can be FUN! And the Cybergun? It’s exactly that.

The Shotgun: Brutal at Close Range

BOOM goes the Boomstick!

Few things are scarier to hear than someone racking a shotgun in close proximity to you. Especially if none of your allies carries one.

When it comes to fighting people that have shotguns, there’s only one rule: Don’t get hit.

If you think getting shot by a bullet hurts, you don’t want to know what it’s like to have a blast of pellets or other nasty things unloaded at you… but then again, the same thing goes for your enemies! There’s a reason I always have a sawn-off shotgun with me when I’m on missions.

The Submachine Gun: The Smaller Brother of the Assault Rifle

It’s all about how you use it… Ra-ta-ta-ta!

It used to be normal to see Submachine Guns on the battlefield when people hadn’t quite figured out yet how to make a full-size rifle automatic. In WWII, both sides used them extensively, and even though Submachine Guns (or SMGs in short) only use pistol-sized ammunition, they were deadly.

Just think about the german MP40 or the American Thompson!

Granted, as time went on, most soldiers started using “proper” automatic rifles. More accurate at range, stronger ammunition, better against body armor, and so on… but don’t underestimate the SMG, especially in close quarters.

You don’t want to be banging your rifle against all kinds of objects while you’re trying to outmanoeuvre your foe. Longer isn’t always better.

Submachine Gun and Knife — that’s how we Commandos roll.

Alright, Commando! That’s it from me for now.

Next up, our certified badass, John, will show you a thing or two about heavy weapons at medium range. Bring some earplugs, John likes his guns loud.

Oh, and do me a favor, will you? Don’t get yourself shot!
