Although maybe somewhat less well known than the American B-17 Flying Fortress, the Avro Lancaster Bomber more than held its own.
One of the largest bombers in WWII, this beast could carry some of the heaviest non-nuclear bombs ever delivered — for example, the 10,000kg “Grand Slam” Bomb.
With 7,377 built Lancaster Bombers, these metal machines delivered not only bombs but also food to allies in need — but to us, the part with the bombs is more interesting, isn’t it?
The Lancaster is one of the most famous planes of World War II and went on to feature in several films — one of them inspiring the famous trench run scene in Star Wars 4.
The Dam Busters
Bomber Squadron 617 flew on a mission with the goal of cracking open german dams to flood the surrounding areas and destroy as much infrastructure as possible… called Operation Chastise.
Flying low to avoid radars, in the dark, without GPS or similar equipment, this was no easy feat! Especially since they had to use a new, specially designed bomb: The “Upkeep” Bouncing Bomb.
This bomb was basically the army’s version of skipping stones across water… in order to avoid nets and other obstacles.
The mission not only was a success but also went on to get documented as one of the most well-known movies about the war.
