Even though I have hired and managed hundreds of people, one hire in particular stands out even years later.
A young man I interviewed for a job was upfront about a felony conviction in his late teens. He owned his mistake as well as his failure to understand the long term consequences of his decisions interacting with police and the courts. At the end of his explanation, he said, “Man, I just need a break” It was one of the most sincere sentences I have ever heard.
