Do you know that many graduates face difficulty in finding the right job in today’s world? There may be a variety of reasons for this. Graduates must understand that a four-year degree may not be sufficient to secure the right job in the fast-paced, constantly evolving, skill-centred world.

Do you want to grab the job that is the right fit for you? In this blog, I will explain six steps you can follow to land your first job.

Find Your Superpower: The first step in finding a job is to figure out where your interests lie and what you are good at. For example, you may be interested in software development, designing, product management or something else entirely. Take some time to reflect on your skills, interests, and learning goals. This will help you narrow down your job search and find positions that are a good fit for you.

Decoding the Industry: The next important step is to conduct research. If you are into tech, then you can follow the updates and developments happening around it. The tech industry is constantly evolving and offers vast opportunities, so it’s crucial to stay up-to-date on the latest trends and developments. This can provide insights into the types of roles and skills currently in demand. So how can you really stay up-to-date? Let me give you some example

  • Use credible news via websites or blogs.
  • Attend conferences, events, and seminars related to your field of interest whether in-person or online. What’s interesting about this is that most of the speakers invited to these events are already experts in their fields.
  • Even if you’re not currently on the hunt for a new job, it’s always a great idea to take a peek at job descriptions for positions that strikes your interest. Recruiters often provide a detailed list of the skills they’re seeking. If you keep seeing the same skill being mentioned over and over again, there’s a good chance that it’s in high demand.
  • Join community forums on specific topics. For example, if you’re into UI/UX design, there are communities out there that focus specifically on this topic. What’s great about these forums is that they’re not just filled with content from big tech companies or professional bloggers — the content is often generated by regular folks like you and me, as well as some people who are actually working in the field. Everyone’s sharing and collaborating, so it’s a great way to learn and make connections!

Connect and Conquer: The connections and relationships you build with people in your industry can be just as valuable as your skills, experience, and education when it comes to advancing your career. Networking is a crucial part of getting the right job in. You can build your network by attending events, conferences, and meetups and being part of local and global communities. This will help you learn more about the industry and build connections that may lead to finding the right opportunity.

Showcasing Your Genius: If you are seeking a job in tech, having a portfolio showcasing your work is essential to impress potential employers. Build a portfolio highlighting your skills and experience, including projects you have worked on, open-source contributions, certifications you earned, and other relevant accomplishments. Your GitHub account, personal website or socials can be your portfolio. Sharing what you are learning on socials not only helps you showcase your skills but also helps you build your network.

Tech Treasure Hunt: The next step is to find a job. Check company websites, social media postings, and online job search tools for job postings. There are several tools available for finding jobs, such as LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Wellfound (formerly AngelList). LinkedIn is a social media platform that every professional and job seeker should use. It helps you build your connections, find the right job and more. Glassdoor is another amazing tool to find employment in MNCs as well as startups. Wellfound is specifically for those who seek jobs in startups. These are just a few examples, and there are many other tools available.

Crack the Code: Once you’ve found a job that interests you, it’s essential to prepare for the interview process. Before the interview, research the company you’re applying to. Look up their mission statement, products or services, and work culture. This will help you understand what the company does and what they value. Prepare for commonly asked interview questions and practice by doing mock interviews with your friends or family. This will help you get feedback on your responses and also help you feel more comfortable answering questions. You can also use some of the tools available online to prepare yourself for the interview. for example

  • ‘interview-warmup’ is an AI-based prep tool you can use to prepare for an interview and boost your confidence. This tool asks you common interview questions like “Tell me a bit about yourself”, then analyses your answers and gives you feedback. You can simply speak out the answers and Google will transcribe the spoken words.
  • BigInterview is an online interview preparation platform designed to help job seekers improve their interview skills and increase their chances of getting hired. The platform offers a range of resources, including video lessons, practice questions, and feedback tools to help users prepare for common interview questions, develop their storytelling skills, and learn how to highlight their strengths and achievements.
  • Pramp is an online peer-to-peer platform for practising interviews for tech jobs. It’s a community of developers and Pramp automatically matches you with other engineers based on your availability, practising needs, and programming language preferences. Interviews are live and 1:1 sessions where both users act as an interviewee and an interviewer.
